Best Headset Type USB or Audio Plug

I am about to purchase a headset for the PC.

Can anyone let me know the best type USB or Audio plug connection.

My present system has a creative 5.1 sound card and speakers.

I borrowed a cheap audio plug head set plugged it in but can hardly hear any sound, and I have turned the inline sound adjuster all the way both ways. My daughter uses it for online chat so it does work, but I can not really get any sound out of it on my PC.

I definately want one that is very easy to set up. The best quality head sets recomended by our local shop are audio plug (German) but after trying the cheap pair I am concerned that they may not work on my PC.

At this stage I do not want them for online use but I will get a pair with a mic in case I need it in the future.

Any advice will be appreciated.

I am using a Gigaware USB Head set and it is great.

The mic is noise canceling so background noises do not transfer easily.

Very comfortable but I rarely wear it. I set it on the desk in front of me and use it as a mic. I use the normal speakers to hear with.

I got it at Radio Shack. It was around $36 US

***Edit

Make sure when you use a USB head set you set it up in the sound properties in the control panel.

The beauty of a USB headset is that Windows sees it as a new sound device. That means that any program capable of running on a device separate from what windows is running on will let you use both at the same time. When I fly online, I use Teamspeak. I Have Windows sound (therefore FS sound) running through my desktop speakers, but TS runs through my headset.

A few years ago I purchased a cheap Sennheiser. which was definitely a very good buy. In fact it was that good that my son has nicked it from me ;) and I have never seen it back........

I'm now using his Thrust headset, which is not bad, but I would never have bought it.

I never had realised the possibilities from a USB headset as described by Tom above. I guess the next headset will be a USB one.

I've got a Koss headset with audio and mic plugs that I picked up at the Navy base in Memphis a few years ago. Works fine with the onboard sound and when running the RL Clark RadioCD gauge (aka 8-track) in FS.

Thanks for the replies.

Looks like I will go for a two way bet. I am looking at a set of Sennheiser audio set but with a creative 5.1 USB external sound card.

Hopefully this will give me the best of both worlds.
