Best mission yet

44% with 700 rounds and 7 kills...

Wow... you are a very dangerous man

Brilliant work there CJ

Hmmm, I must be getting olde, 6 is my best go. Although I can take solace in one mission at 88%, and if I remember, 3 victories; yes in a
DR1:d

I must admit........

I do use a couple of "cheats". I flew 90% realism on this mission because I can't seem to get the hang of mixture adustment. In the heat of battle I forget to adjust it and more times than I can remember I've had my engine konk out on me. I also use the TAC set at 2 miles. My old monitor will only produce 1280x1024 and at that resolution you can't see the enemy until he's already filled you full of holes (with a little help from the "sniping" bug). I also use the targeting cone, but no targeting brackets. The cone shows the general vicinity of the aircraft only. Also, in the heat of a dogfight, the aircraft targeted isn't always the one I'm chasing. I'll take a target of opportunity in a heartbeat and on this particular mission it was definitely a "target rich environment"!
I usually fly on "hard" settings on the flight model, which would be 95% realism, but on this particular mission I used the "medium" setting. I was told that on "medium" the FM performed closer to the actual aircraft.

Is that true - does anybody know? Pol?
Apart from that, don't apologize, Cameljockey. I always find Camels easy to shred into stripes - they're just very fragile planes. And when the air is full of them - why not let the Spandaus clear up a bit? (lol)

Medium? Yikes.

Flight models were never designed to use on anything but the realistic setting - who knows what will happen.

Hang on P3 should be better.

Cheers

It does seem a bit docile on medium. Maybe it's because I'm used to the hard setting. That puts me back to 95%. Now if I can only get used to that *%^$@#% mixture control!

CJ

Cameljockey, do you foresee the time when, when P3 has settled in and everyone's tuned their machines just right, that there will be a running record kept online showing the best hit rates per hours spent in the air by whichever pilots fight online?
Have you heard if that kind of statistic is down the road ahead or does the workshop adjustments mean that it will be so difficult to compare like with like that it couldn't be done.
With online car racing (ie. LFS) the statistics are a part of the whole online community and things like lap times and world titles are proudly guarded.

Hello,
concerning the throtte and mixture this is quite easy - i do not think it was in real life, but ...
First i must say i dislike the pre-programmed keys for actin in all of those Microsoft flight simulators as a real pita :censored: !"§$%&/()!!! whatever.

So i just changed the "mine" file settings to my liking, where the key left to #1 on the keyboard is mixture=0, 1 = 10 percent, 2 = 20 etc., and 0 = 100 percent mixture. I do not need those keys for the throttle since i operate this with the lever at the joystick.

As well i assigned two keys to increase or decrease mixture by key strokes - the number changes from plane to plane, so it needs 70 or so strokes from zero to 100 percent mixture in the Fokker EIII, or 120 or so for the Albatros DVa. Nieuport and Camel are also a bit different.

For starting at the aerodrome i press "e" for automatic starting, and give full throttle. When the engine revs a bit higher i apply cut-off for the mixture, and quickly apply 10 or so keystrokes to increase the mixture again. The engine will shortly misfire, and then run perfectly again - and it will now provide full thrust from 0 to 4000 meters. It is very seldom your engine will conk out by itself if you use 10 percent or so mixture all the time.

As well i switched Shift-m to "magneto on", and Ctrl-m to "magneto off". E still start the engine, and ctrl-b switches the "battery" (whatever this means in a WW1 plane) on and off.

For cutting the engine i can either use ctrl-m two times for switching off both magnetoes, or the key left of #1 for cutting mixture altogether.

Greetings,
Catfish

To me the kicker is the 44%, some missions everything just Clics. My personal best was 3 victories with 32%, while I average around 17%

There can be No winning formula, it just happens :applause::applause::applause:

CamelJockey, looking at the pilot it seems you could have stayed a bit more, but he had some more urgent things to do. Did he have beans & chili before flight?:icon_lol:

BTW I also fly on 90% realism. But it's the guns I have set to "strongest" . Set to "Normal" they seem to have very little effect.

My guns are "normal" with a normal spread. I just get real close before I fire, and use only short bursts (1-2 seconds). Any more than that and you're just wasting ammo. Aim for the pilot. He can take a lot fewer rounds than the aircraft. Also the pilot is seated right where most of the aircraft's vital components are located so you're bound to hit something important if you aim for him. Bullets punching holes in canvas doesn't have much effect, punching holes in bodies and fuel tanks works better!:tgun2:

Geez, CJ,

You're almost close enough to saw off their rudder with your prop, just like they did in Waldo Pepper! What was your range? Between 25 and 50, I'm guessing.

But you're absolutely correct with your tactics. Get as close as possible, use short bursts, and aim for "meat or metal". Canvas hits don't do squat (unless you're lucky enough to clip a spar and you get the target shed a wing).

Nice shooting, BTW.:icon31:

I could have stayed, but I was alone. No wingmen, no more Camels to shoot down, (my wingmen got the other five before they bought it), so I figured I may as well go home and crawl into a bottle of schnapps!:isadizzy:

About the Fm for the DR1

This is one for WF2. Didn't she mention that she's flown one? Hey girlfriend, give us a holler and your opinion.

CJ

When P2 arrived WF2 and myself petitioned the OFF Team to modify the Flight Modeling of the DR. P1's DR was a great addition, as it was cobbled together in one week. So good on the Team for a great effort, however the expectations for P2 were of course higher. In one of the patches, the DR appeared to be modified, and it's behaviour was far better suited to the flight characteristics of the actual aircraft. There are still a few issues, which look to be addressed in P3.

WF2 has flown a replica, ( there are no original DR1's), and we had some dialoge on how it performed. There has been some replica's flown and their flights, etc., posted on Youtube, etc.

While Pol may rightly champion the Realistic Settings, it would appear the "Medium" setting emulates the aircrafts characteristics to a more accurate level. After the "wing" issue was sorted out, the craft was flown by many a different pilot, without mishap, such as the notorious Camel tempermental problems from torque.

Cheers,

Oooooo no you don't Cameljockey! ..... trying to sucker me into this all over again. I am still shell shocked from the last encounter.

... but I will say I agree with Mr. British_eh that the closest flight characteristics in P2 is when set to medium. P3? We will see.

Q: Has OFF ask anyone in the P3 Beta testing, that has flown Real Life WW-1 planes, to test fly and compare?

Just curious,
WF2

Hi, WomenFly2
you wrote: "I agree with Mr. British_eh that the closest flight characteristics in P2 is when set to medium."
Did you mean that for the Fokker Dr. I, or for all the planes rather?

And what about ForceFeedback sticks - GimpyGuy wrote, that he likes to feel the stalls coming on. What do you think?
Cheers; Olham

The pilot who flew that illustrious mission, one Oberleutnant Ullrich Scheck, was killed in action this afternoon. Responding to an attack on our aerodrome, Oblt Scheck downed 2 Sopwith Camels shortly after becoming airborne. Whilst chasing a third Camel he was blown to smithereens by one of our own anti aircraft batteries. We wanted to bury him with full military honors, but we couldn't find a big enough piece.:kilroy:
He will be sorely missed,

CJ
