Best single-slot video card solution for P3

More is better.... BUT....

I did have it running fine on my 6600GT. Check our reccomended PC specs on the website. Hopefully that helps. :)

Thanks to you both, and I did have a look at the specs.

That said, the specs didn't mention this card:

In reading-up on benchmarks, I've found that it tends to trounce most other single-slot solutions, excepting the Nvidia 295GTX (which is newer and more expensive).

My concern about cards with multi-GPU configurations is that they have shown a tendency in the past to produce "stuttering" during gameplay, something which really kills a flight-sim for me.

Anyway, I thought I'd ask the experts on the subject, those who have already played P3. I swore-off SLI back when it stood for "scan-line-interleave," BTW, so that's off the table.
 
I've been running FSX and OFFP2 on a 8600GT and it's just fine. I noticed a bigger improvement in FSX when I went with a faster CPU. If you have the power supply to do it, the 9800GTx is rated very highly.
 
I am running an Intel duo core E6850 chip with twin Nvidia 8800GTX SLi.

P3 runs very nicely.

yeah nice ATI card but for CFS3 you don't get the same reflections in cockpit etc as NVidia so not as good I think. Also Crossfire on 1 slot I only had problems with SLI and Crossfire in the past so avoid if possible. That's my 2p/2c
8800 GTX is a nice card Nio works very well for OFF too (I had one for a while one of the best cards I owned for longevity of top performance).
 
All Depends on two things, luckly you change one of them

1) Sufficent Wattage to power it

2) We know as to the number of spots needed, but do we have space ( Length ) in that case ??
 
There's no way you could use an 8800GTX in anything less than a mid tower. I've only got about an inch clearance between the end of the card an my hard drive. And I thought that X1950 was big. sheesh!

My current system is similar to yours, an E6850 + 8800GTX (+ 4GB RAM + X-Fi Titanium sound + TrackIR). I run P2 on at 1920x1200 with the scenery and terrain set to 3, and the other sliders set to five. My FPS is good, but can sink to the twenties near the ground and in heavy weather, clouds and rain. P3 has given me an excuse to build a new system, but whatever I do, I want to see meaningful improvement in performance.

Years ago, I puchased two Voodoo cards to run RB3D at 1024x768. Gameplay was smooth as silk, but ever since, I've felt that there had to be a more efficient, cost-effective solution than two complete PCB. Multi-GPU cards would appear to make more sense, since there's no wasted PCB and SMC, but the darn things have a reputation for "stuttering" in games, regardless of how fast they run a benchmark. Hence my dilemma.

Anyone tried the game with one of the new Core i7 parts?

An Antec P180 is by no means a small case, but I had to remove the upper hard-drive cage to get an 8800GTX to fit. Eventually, I became unhappy with the thermal characteristics of Antec, and moved the motherboard and other compartments into a Cooler Master 830:

The darn thing is enormous, and has a cavernous bay to work in. If you've got the space in your digs to set it up, I highly recommend it. :gossip:

It looks like I may have resolved my uncertainty about the 4870x2:

There's a refresh of the 280GTX, an upgraded/upclocked model based on a recent die-shrink called the 285GTX, so I believe that's where my credit card is headed.

Intel is supposed to announce price-cuts on their processors this coming Monday. I think that I'll pick up an E8600 and a P5Q Pro, and build myself a Phase 3 system around the new video card.

On a side note, the Intel Core I7 parts are apparently doing extremely well with two-way and three-way SLI, but that's way too exotic (and expensive) for my taste.

Hope my X1950 pro 512 card copes with P3,although I only have a lowly amd 4000+ single core cpu for now!

If I may say, you're wasting video power, with the clouds on 5. You can't get any advantage from them, they're just pretty to look at, you can't fly through the Heavy's. Most put them on 3, some us ( ME ) can't see the difference on 1. Betcha it solves your sinking FPS. Try it and see, don't cost anything :kilroy:
