Billy Joel: His earlier music was my favorite.....

I first started listening to Billy Joel just after his "Piano Man" LP was released, back in the 70s. His subsequent LPs were great too. Haven't listened to much of his more recent music though.

this one is unusual. It's from 1975. He's sporting a moustache, and it was before Liberty Devitto was his drummer:

Billy Joel is simply one of the most gifted musicians, songwriters, and producers of our generation. Not only has he mastered rock and roll and pop, but he also went on to be a conducter for a philharmonic orchestra!

Frank Sinatra defined singing for a generation. Joel doesn't have a voice like that. But in terms of mastery of several musical forms, Joel pretty much defines it for us.

i never thought sinatra had a good singing voice. i always figured his appeal was style.

joel, i acknowledge his HUGE talent, but i would not categorize anything he did as rock. pop, folk, ok yes, but only foir the sake of categorizing. in my mind, he should have his own category, kinda like credence does.
i always thought of him as a one-time thing. i don't think there will be anyone again who can do what he did, like he did, if that makes any sense.
