I fixed my B-17 to skip bomb and here are some results at Bismarck Sea.In the one pic you can see the skipping splashes.

During the battle the first Japanese ship sunk was by B-17s skip bombing. The first planes used in skip bombing were actually B-17s but they were found to be to slow and cumberson in battle. The were then used mostly at night for skip bombing.

looks great!

sorry if im getting the wrong end of the stick here, but is this the same 'bouncing bomb' technique used in the dam buster raid?

if so, how did you manage to get the effects to work?

I see not much interest in the Battle of the Bismarck Sea. That's the way it goes I guess.Guess I'll just do it for fun.

Talon, was this a special kind of bomb or a standard bomb dropped using some sort of method to make it skip? Very cool possibilities in either case.

No its fanatastic. Never knew B17's took this on. i would like to try it when get RSA going; probs just now.

Guess at the time they just used everything they could find to best advantage to win. GOOD ON 'EM.

think asked above was it specially made bomb or just adaptions of standard ones? And why worry about skipping, just plonk it on ?? curious.

This is not the first time bouncing boms have been talk about, I look forwar to try these missions if there anything close to the Dam Busters they shoud be funn! :icon_lol:

The only special gear used was a 4-5 second delay fuse on the bomb. Otherwise, if you get low enough and go fast enough a bomb will skip like a rock on the water until it hits something like the side of a ship. 5th AF got really good at this.

The Dam Busters needed special gear to not only get the bomb to skip, but then hug the dam wall and sink to a pre-determined depth before exploding.

I am looking forward to these Missions. To Skip-Bomb a Japanese Freighter in a B-17! What were the odds of success?

Actually you will be flying the B-17 in 1 or 2 missions. Other planes you will be flying are- B-25,A-20,Beaufighter,P-40 and P-38. There will be a B-17 made especially for these missions.
