Blenheim Bombsight

Hi Guys,

quite a few months back I showed a work in progress replacement bombsight for the MkI Blenheim.

I had it finished except for a problem were along each side edge of the in screen picture you could see an area of untextured space. which spoilt the effect of the new image over just a gunsight ring image.

well tonight whilst working on something else I had an idea, and for once the idea worked :mixedsmi:

below is the new bombsight image for the MkI Blenheim included in ETO. I now have it matched up with the edge of the viewable screen area. to sight you track your target until it enters the white circle to the left of the elevation calibrating post.

now that it fits correctly it can be put into the upcoming ETO update.

regards Rob

Hey Rob,

That looks great!!! A real improvement over that rather awful stock "binoculars"-sight that most aircraft use.

Awesome dude! Now how about the Lanc as well mate? :jump:

Hi Clive,

I have also been playing with a bombsight image again to try and emmulate a H2S radar screen, I have fitted this to a H2S Lancaster model with a unique texture name so only the H2S lancaster uses it.

when the ground has lights or flares or fires etc its pretty easy to use this sight. in the middle of the night with no light source its a bit harder, but if you turn on the cockpit lights it helps. Its no less functional than the standard bombsight when used in pitch black conditions.

The lancasters information when viewed in game has a blurb about how best to use this sight.

I'm happy to have a go at redoing the bomb aimers view in the normal Lancasters or any other plane for that matter.

If you have a pic of what the bombsite looks like and what the expected view would look like I can try to replicate it.

Hi Jeff,
this one wont fit the MkIV Blenheim were putting together, but I'm working on a new one for that as well.
There is one small issue though, in the MkIV as you turn the plane you see part of the nose section of the model moving across the top of the screen. sort of spoils it a bit. I'm looking to see if I can fix that.

Hi Murray,
Thanks mate the family are well, I'm actually thinking of taking the young bloke down to Point Cook to visit the air museum in the very near future, if your free maybe we could catch up and do some drooling together.

regards Rob.

Not all Lancs iirc, but crack squadrons like 617 used them to great effect with the Tallboy and Grand Slam weapons - they were too expensive to scatter like confetti.

Hi Guys,

Hi Clive,

here is a work in progress shot of a MkXlV/T1 area bombing sight for the Lancaster. it still needs a glass plate pianted into the centre and the reflected bomb site cross hair in the middle of the glass plate, and the mounting bracket coming up from the bottom of the image.

I'll do a similar one with a wimperis CSBS similar to the one for the Blenhiem.

I'll fit the wimperis version to the MkI lancs in ETO and the MkXIV version to the MkIII's and the SABS MkIIA version for the Specials such as 617 tallboy and grandslam carries, and of course the H2S sight.

a good read can be had here about teh bombsights

You clever b*gger Rob! These sights will really add to the immersion factor. The old stock one is a bit long in the tooth nowadys.

and thanks for the link. :)

I recognize that pic. Stared through that sight many times.

Great game. And some what complicated to master if you have the sight difficulty settings set for realistic

I used to fly B17 Flying Fortress: The Mighty Eighth a fair bit and loved it. I still think you can't beat it for an WW2 immersive bomber sim. It's such a shame shockwave lost their bottle when they bought the rights to upgrade it.
