'Blown Diffusers'

"On Saturday the FIA’s Charlie Whiting wrote to the teams about blown diffusers, and while a clampdown on hot and cold blowing from Silverstone onward caught most of the attention, the letter included a huge change to the exhaust rules for next year.

The plan is to have basic designs that exit behind the diffuser, and thus can have no impact on it. That will mean an end to the superbly innovative side exhaust system run by Renault this year.

The details will be discussed at Thursday’s meeting of the Technical Working Group in London, but the FIA is believed to be intent on pushing through the main points. Technical rule changes for 2012 have to be fixed by June 30."

Detailed during the down time in Canada last weekend.
Renault will be pissed!!!
As I understand it, for 2012 the exhaust pipes must be cylindrical in cross section and extend beyond the rear underbody of the vehicle.
Be great if the old Lotus 49 or Matra MS11 tubes returned .......:applause:

im mostly an old american dirt tracker, just what is a "blown Diffuser"?..i read the few artices i saw..but i dont really get it..saw where it takes the "full force of the exhaust gasses and forces it through the blown diffuser in the corners" whats the purpose? and advantage? and what is "engine mapping" i thought i had understood that until now.seems its not what i thought it was....

The bottom floor of an F1 is shaped like an airfoil at the rear end, air that flows underneath it creates downforce.
With a 'blown diffusor' the exhaust gasses pass through this diffusor too. Normally when you release the throttle the amount of gasses is very low, but this season some F1 cars found a way to program the engine control unit so that it still injects fuel when the trottle is released, but by cutting the ignition the fuel ignites in the hot exhaust pipes, creating a steady flow of hot gasses even when the throttle is not used thus creating downforce.
This system was used in rally cars several years ago btw, to keep the turbo spooled up all the time preventing turbo lag.

F1 cars have a switch on the steering wheel to select 'engine mapping', basically let them choose between several programs for the engine control unit. Variables they can choose include more or less rpm's, fuel consumption, rain settings (slower throttle respons) or more downforce created by the exhaust gasses. Obviously that uses more fuel which is why it's used more in qualifying.
