Book Recommendation

Eoraptor1

SOH-CM-2022
I'm currently listening to Jon Meacham's Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power, on Audiobook, usually while driving. I'm no one's expert, but I think it's fair to say I probably have an above-average knowledge of the Founding Fathers. There's lots I didn't know in this book however. The big one is that the expansion of slavery into any new US territories was almost outlawed right at the beginning of the Republic. It missed by one vote; a delegate from New Jersey was ill and unable to attend. Jefferson knew this was going to mean trouble down the road, and greatly regretted it. Would there have been a Civil War if the measure had passed? There's no way of knowing. Another thing is how some of Jefferson's own most famous statements are dismissed in letters to friends by Jefferson himself as over-the-top hyperbolenecessary to sway minds. Several times I literally found myself making Scooby-Doo noises.

John Meacham of Newsweek is a good author.,Jefferson is a better subject than he however!.No counting the volume's about him...Each author ,has their own agenda. These thoughts are woven into their works.I never read a book about Thomas Jefferson ,not to include this..Different times flavor the writings...We have to be careful to distinguish Truth from Conjecture..Mind Reading is not Factual history. When it comes to one mind?..No one will ever reach that level of complexity as Thomas Jefferson..one of Americas Founding Fathers!

To doom A Culture ,Destroy its Myths and Hero's!

You've never read a book about Jefferson, beana? That surprises me. I've read lots of them now. I have quite a library, but I've been thinning it out; donating to our Public Library and such. That whole knot of people Jefferson moved in are frightfully interesting to me. I get into a lot of trouble with some people however, because I don't believe in the cultic worship of leader-types, which certain folks view as disrespect. I really think that's something the human race needs to outgrow for our own survival. To me it's idolatry, which always comes with a price tag.

The person I find hugely interesting who really smart people seem perfectly content to pass along disinformation about is Aaron Burr. IMO he almost had to be demonized so Hamilton and Jefferson could be semi-deified.

[h=2]Act 1, Scene 2, Page 6[/h]

CASSIUS Why, Caesar straddles the narrow world like a giant, and we petty men walk under his huge legs and look forward only to dying dishonorably, as slaves. Men can be masters of their fate. It is not destiny’s fault, but our own faults, that we’re slaves. “Brutus” and “Caesar.” What’s so special about “Caesar”? Why should that name be proclaimed more than yours? Write them together—yours is just as good a name. Pronounce them—it is just as nice to say. Weigh them—it’s just as heavy...So It is with Jefferson!

Did I sound offended? I wasn't. I have a thick hide. I've had my home broken into. Vandalized. Scars over both eyes now. Had my books set on fire - while I was holding them. Lots of hate mail; digital and snail-mail, but both are sent anonymously. This is a very civil forum. I think the worst thing I've ever been called here is "inane". I'll take that any day over being beaten up.

BTW: I've lectured on Julius Caesar.

Has Spring come to Beautiful Niagara? Love The Niagara Frontier..I took a sentimental journey last week. The Bone Yard Has no Spring. So I drove the trip to my former home in Sullivan County NY.I encountered Spring in numerous places. from Florida to the Catskill Mt...It seemed apparent that when in Virginia Spring was in full bloom. In Southern Penna,it was in progress, northern Penna it was just starting,....It came and was gone as areas and altitude changed. Georgia,South Carolina,North Carolina, Virginia,West Virginia,Maryland, ,Penna,,Delaware, New Jersey and N.Y.....

Enjoyed a North East High and Weather was Perfect..At My destination it was still winter like.A few later it started...Infinitesimal buds in the trees, the grass a new shade of green, the skunk cabbage in the woods, the Dogwoods,Forsythia in golden color. The Tulips, standing tall in full colors,The now pastel colors of early spring..the rose color ,the purple color, the golden color..and all the colors. They were subdued,at a distant, seemed misty like, delicate, new ,fresh. It was a the world of color was being invented.....A few days after it was now pronounced..The Sun would rise, the dew, ascending, and all colors were illuminate by the sun..it was the back lighting that was most impressive.

Factor in the singing birds, the Wild turkey gobbling, the sounds of the life and earth are like music. The still cool air ,the new life happening, its hard to discount the believe of something greater than we.

Now Back In The Bone Yard...The On coming Season of Purgatory is upon us.The Same Dull Flat Land Scape, devoid of spring, for that matter,Summer,Fall and Winter...as I right this,My Ole Friend The Pond Gator is there, looking at me thru the window,He is taking my picture..for his Wanted Dead Or Alive File!...Such is Life in the Near After Life...

After A 3000 mile round trip,by car,of which I enjoyed all the driving...I'm Back!! I will plan a Fall trip,God willing,I think I want to see the Falls one more time in Autumn Colors!....Glad To Be on SOH, .... However ,Spring is a state of mind, and I have it in my mind! ..Have Fun!! Vin!!

Yes, it’s finally Spring here. Last month we had a seven day period when we high a high of 83 one day and a low of 29 on another. I put my plants out on the porch and half of them died in a windstorm and sub-freezing weather. If you’re familiar with the area, you know how the weather pattern can change.

I walk the trails in the Falls Park every day when the weather is good with my camera. I tried to upload some pictures I’d taken last month of the ice breakers on the Niagara river but for some reason had trouble doing it. Terrapin Point was covered in sheets of ice, which is all melted now. I also had pictures of the Maids of the Mist being lower into the river from their slips. That ice is all melted now and you can go right up to the railings facing the Horseshoe Falls.

You’re a bird watcher? I saw a Peregrine Falcon in the gorge last summer. I knew they were nesting here, because they’d said so on the news, but this is the first time I’d ever seen one in the wild. I had my camera in hand, but she was moving much too fast for me to capture. Lots of waterfowl here. The Rapids and Falls beat up the fish, so all they really have to do is go get them. There are also Canada Geese moving through all the time. This week, I’ve already seen new goslings. You can usually walk right up to the geese. They’re used to people, and it’s illegal to shoot birds within the City Limits, but I keep my distance when they’re nesting. If you come too close to their babies they WILL bite you, and I’m not talking about a little warning nip; they mean to teach you a lesson.

I have the Aerosoft Buffalo/Niagara Falls scenery for FSX, which is a great improvement over the stock, but FSX seems limited in the way in can move AI ground traffic over terrain. It doesn’t like slopes. The Rainbow Bridge is very well rendered, but the North and South Grand Island Bridges are mere extensions of road. You also see ground traffic doing abrupt Evel Kenevel types jumps on the Robert Moses Parkway, or as I call it, SATAN. There are currently plans to demolish about 20 miles of it so as to reconnect the city with the waterfront, but it may be much too little, much too late. Somewhere on CSPAN.org there’s footage of me pontificating about Robert Moses. I would have alerted the SOH membership when it first aired, but it wasn’t my lecture; I was just part of the Q&A, and I looked like a bag of wet ashes.

The Florida Gulf. My sister, her husband, and my two nieces live in Miami, and my baby sister lives in Alabama, but no one near the Gulf. Believe me, they would get quite a kick out of this whole exchange.

Stay well,

JAMES
