This story popped up today, but has been around for a long time. Introducing the re-branded Subliminal Advertising, banned in the mid 1970's. It's not quite the same, but the intent is. Get us to spend more by influencing our subconscious mind. Once you get tuned to the right frequency you will see this in all kinds of places in all sorts of shades and hues. Sort of like Neo finally "seeing" the Matrix as it really was, streams of code. Once you're on to the game things are more back in your control and you're less likely to be "steered".

Oh if you're there, you'll be "Steered", never mind if you're aware of it.
But it's not particularly sinister.
Supermarkets in particular have had years and years to research what works and what not.
Want to move a brand a little more quickly?
A little up from waist-high on the shelf is all it takes.
 
It's one thing to see someone washing cars for sale to make them more appealing, quite another to subtly arrange the showroom in secret to influence me to buy something I wouldn't have otherwise. I've caught sellers at their game many times by staying aware.
