In '39 -'40 the RAF was desperate for fighter aircraft and so approximately sixty Mk. IVs were produced as fighters with the addition of the four gun belly pack. These served mainly with Coastal Command to protect convoys from aerial attack. As these a/c were replaced by better equipment they were shipped to the Middle East where they could still perform a useful role.
