The P-51 was originally designed to a British specification but it didn't really come into its own until a rolls royce test pilot, Ronald Harker, was evaluating other engine designs for rolls royce. he did some calculations on the p-51a airframe and that with the new Merlin 61 and discovered that the aircraft's top speed could be in excess of 441mph...
