Campaign aircraft assignment - possible bug?

Wondering if this may be a possible bug, design decision, or simply my ignorance...here goes:

How is it that I can choose a squadron that is flying Neuport 23's, 24's, or 27's (none included in BHH to the best of my knowledge) at a particular date and be placed in a Neuport 17 (for example, RFC-29)? Are aircraft characteristics modified on the 17 to reflect the higher Neuports? Is this a bug? Is it a design decision to allow the player to keep on flying? Or is it my ignorance in some way, shape, or form (which could be very likely as well too)?

Stand in so you can keep flying in the campaign. Correct no 23,24,27 yet.
It's a N17 same spec. same FM.
