Can anyone help with this please..?

I seem to have lost my FlightSim world. FS9 loads as usual, but on creating or selecting any flight, I have absolutely no terrain mesh or textures:

On checking the Display Settings, each time I launch most of the values have been reset to zero no matter what I have previously saved them as. Please can anyone help with this before I rip it from my computer in pure frustration. I'm usually pretty good at eventually sorting out my FS problems, but this one's got the better of me.

Cheers, Ardy.

Can you check your fs9.cfg? It should be inthis directory: Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FS9

I'd have said that this could also be a graphics card error, but this would not reset your sim. Restting values usually mean a corrupted config file.

Good luck!

I'd check the video, just to be sure. Run the DXDIAG.exe and make sure the card isn't having any issues with "Direct Draw". If the DirectX Diagnostics come up with no problems found, and all your scenery still looks like that, I would suspect the FS9 Config as Sascha recommends.

How do your aircraft look?

Thanks for your suggestions, but no joy. I ran dxdiag - it claimed no problems found (and all other graphic apps seem to be fine).
And regarding the fs9.cfg - I've got old ones saved, tried replacing previous values, tried replacing the whole file. Each time the sim resets various Settings - Display values to zero... aaargh!!

And my aircraft are displaying just fine. Most add-on sceneries are showing but with problems due to the lack of terrain information.

I won't rip it out just yet, but maybe a new install from scratch is required (although it's taken a couple of years to get where it is).

Since you've already tried other versions of your config file this may have no effect, but I'd try renaming the config and letting FS rebuild a new one just to see what happens.

What mesh are you using? It looks like you've lost mesh and landclass info. If you are using addon mesh I would try disabling it. If you are using default mesh with addon textures maybe you could switch back to default and see if that helps.

To me it looks like something in your mesh or textures has been corrupted. I'm no expert on these matters, so take my advise for what it's worth.

edit: I just re-read your posts and I can't think of anything that would cause the sim to reset display settings on its own, so my advise probably will not help.

Are you sure the whole world is affected the same way? Maybe something has gone wrong in your scenery folder(s)? Grasping at straws here, hoping you get it sorted so I'll know what to do if this ever happens to my sim.

Oh Dear...it seems dear old FS doesn't want to build a new fs9.cfg - it just keeps crashing. Going back to my current cfg, this is what it keeps resetting:

fs9-3.jpg

I've tried disabling my add-on mesh and landclass - infact all my add-ons but to no avail. And this is happening at every location. :dispirited:

If this was my sim I'd rename the FS9 folder to something like "FS9_orininal" and do a clean install next to it (I keep a clean install on my computer as a backup for just this type of thing). Once you have the new install up and running I'd rename that folder "FS9_stock" and rename the original back to FS9. Then I'd copy the contents of the modules folder from the stock to the original install and see what happens. If that doen't help try the scenery config or even the whole scenery folder. I'm guessing some .dll or something got corrupted. It seems to me that some basic function is buggered up.

Completely buggered I think sums it up - it won't even launch properly now.

My current install is into the default location (C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\fs9.exe) on a W7 64bt system. Now I think I read somewhere that this is actually unadvisable,
so if I 'm going to start again, would it be best to install somewhere else on the C drive, or even better to install on a newly acquired D drive (internal but 3Tb - maybe too large for running apps from?)

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated. I think I'll give it to the other side of the weekend- just incase anything inspiring occurs(!) Otherwise I've got a long slog ahead of me. Ardy.

Resolved !!

I had just made the mistake of installing a very old scenery into FS9 - megaCity Dallas, which I had not re-installed in my latest (2 year old) setup, and I couldn't remember why.

As many sceneries do, it wrote its own lines to the scenery cfg file, without asking. Now I had clocked this and had removed them via a utility called Scenery Manager (which I wouldn't be without) - also checking the entries had gone from the scenery file, which they had.

What I had not realised was that although they had entered themselves as the newest entry and renumbered the listing accordingly, they had actually DELETED the first 4 scenery entries at the bottom of the list, which included the Default Terrain and Default Scenery folders, in effect butchering my scenery .cfg file.

So one to watch out for if anyone else is using this scenery, which I have now totally removed and deleted as it offered very little (if anything) over GE Pro anyway. That's why I hadn't re-installed.

Cheers. A.

Glad you got it sorted out, aardvark62. Always feels good when you dodge the bullet of rebuilding the entire sim. :encouragement:
