Canada's new Hercules aircraft

Jr. Admin
It is very nice to see our Forces getting some new equipment, I know the men and women in the Cdn Armed Forces have always "made do" with what they had to work with and they do a mighty fine job at keep equipment going long past the intended end of life. I was totally shocked to see that we have been operating some of our Herc's for 50 years and they are still in constant use - talk about your brave souls. The Navy is also operating Seakings that are the same age, and they keep the things flying. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

PLEASE DO NOT turn this thread into a bashing fest of anyone, we know successive governments have not kept our Men & Women in the service up to date and this is only a small start, but it is a start. I posted this as a tribute to the BRAVE members of our Armed Forces who despite obstacles always get the job done and serve our country - they deserve our respect and the best equipment we can provide them now and always.:salute:

First of Canada's new Hercules aircraft arrives in southern Afghanistan

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - Canadian pilots will be able to drop cargo to troops on the ground with far greater accuracy now that a new Hercules aircraft has arrived in southern Afghanistan.
The first of Canada's new Hercules C-130J aircraft arrived at Kandahar Airfield over the weekend, with a second scheduled to arrive later this spring.
The new C-130J models will eventually replace the older, smaller and slower Hercules aircraft, which have been in service for nearly 50 years.
Some of the older aircraft have logged as many as 45,000 hours in the air ? nearly double the flying time that they were meant for.
"The age of the aircraft is a big factor. We've extended their service life well beyond their intended use," said Maj. Brad Wintrup, commanding officer of the tactical aviation unit, which is part of Canada's Air Wing.
Aircraft maker Lockheed Martin wants to know how the Canadians managed to keep the old Hercules flying so long, he added.
The new aircraft look almost identical to the old ones, except that they are slightly longer and can seat up to 125 people instead of 92.
But that's about where the similarities end. The new Hercules are largely automated and require fewer crew members.
Pilots say it will be easier to drop supplies to soldiers because a computer now calculates wind speed, weather conditions and other variables. The computer can hit a drop point within 30 metres. Before, when it was done manually, supplies could land much farther from the drop point.
"When we're doing an air drop, the computer's actually doing the drop and we're monitoring it. So it tends to be much, much more accurate," Wintrup said.
Most of the flying to ferry troops and equipment around Afghanistan is done by Canadians.
The Conservative government ordered 17 new Hercules aircraft from Lockheed Martin three years ago at a cost of $1.4 billion. So far, the company has delivered five aircraft. Two will be in Kandahar and the rest will be based at the air force base in Trenton, Ont.
The entire order is supposed to be filled by the end of 2012.
Other countries, including the United States, Britain and Australia, already fly the new Hercules aircraft.
Two new Hercules aircraft will arrive in Kandahar just as Canadian troops prepare to wind up their combat mission later this year.
A decision has not yet been made on whether the new aircraft will stay in Afghanistan after Canadian troops begin a training mission in Kabul in July.

I think it is great!

Back in the late 90s, I used to take a ferry from Anacortes, WA to Victoria, B.C., and would stay at CFB Esquimalt. Very nice place. They know how to treat their CPOs!!!

Chief you are so right about CFB Esquimalt, one of my best friends growing up got his training there as a Clearence Diver, he told me they call it the Yaught Squadron, and it is one of the best duty stations a sailor can get. This guy was due to retire last year after 25 years, and they went and commissioned him so he is in for a few more yet training the new divers, Fleet Diving Unit is also getting some new gear finally but stuff like Dry Suites, and Decomp Chambers don't make the news like a few new Herc's, F35's or new Supply ships - but all the new gear they give these folks is good news in Gig's book!:salute:

I had never experienced such luxury as I did at CFB Esquimalt's CPO Mess. The Wardroom had white linen table cloths, REAL silverware, china, and crystal drinking glasses. The menu one night had Chicken Cordon Bleu. Unbelievable! The room I stayed in was fairly spartan, as far as accomodations go, but hey, it was FREE! And, of course, the Canadian beer was heavenly.

What I would do would get my Admin/Pers office to cut me some no cost TAD orders for a weekend. I knew what time to catch the ferry at Anacortes, and which bus to connect with to get me to Esquimalt. The Admin/Pers at Esquimalt would stamp my orders, and voila! Fun-filled, relaxing weekend!

It was GREAT!

Thanks for the update...I didn't realize how many they had ordered. 20 years ago I had a flight on a Herc as an AirCadet...will never forget it. Another one I'm waiting for is the Cyclone helicopter!

New Planes

The J Model Hercules is the hot ticket right now. It is slowly starting to replace USAF airframes as well.

I've spent a little time up in Victoria, BC too, albeit visiting the PPCLI (Princess Pats-our sister unit) when they had a battalion baracks there.
