Carenado 172 vc night light too bright

Blues is Life
Hey folks,
I haven't flown the Carenado 172N at night very often but one thing I noticed was that the night light was way too bright for effective night flying. The older 172s I remember flying for real either had an adjustable brightness knob and/or an on/off reddish glow. Has anyone modified their 172 for a more subtle night light?

Cheers

Do you mean the lighting of the textures or the overall effects light. There are 2 ways to light a panel, one is with a Light map or night texture on the panel textures, the other is to use an effect which generates light that lights up everything inside the cockpit. The usual method in default aircraft is to use both methods.

If it is the effect you are talking about this can easily be changed by editing these lines in the appropriate effect file which is located inside the Effects folder.

Color Start=100, 100, 100, 1
Color End=180, 140, 100, 0

100, 100, 100 represents the Red green and blue intensities with a valid range from 0,0,0 (black) through to 255,255,255 (pure white). You will need to mess about with the color start and color end values to reduce the brightness.

Do make a backup of the file first though!

Can you provide a screenshot? I could take a look and see how it compares to the lights in my Skyhawk.

Cheers,

I am not at my home computer now but I will take a screenie when I get home tomorrow. Basically it looks like in the Carenado 172, your vc lighting looks to be from the white dome light, not the red panel lighting. Basically it would be like trying to drive at night with the dome light on in your car lol.

Stock FSX aircraft did not originally have night lighting, only dome lights.

Carenado planes will have seperate dome light controls.

If you can find the dome light in your 172 in its config file and cancel it out (turn it off) then you will have regular lighting, however, I believe the instrumentation on stock FSX aircraft also are 'without' gauge illumination.

Hint; What you can do is rename the VC dome light classification (light type) to something else, such as recognition or the like. Then use the keyboard shortcut for that light and turn it on and off that way.

Hey Ken, here is a pair of screenies of the VC lighting. As you can see the chart light and the dome light are 'on' as your night lighting. There is a switch just below the chart light that controls the all the cockpit lighting. There doesnt appear to be a light switch or knob on the switch panel as I recalled in N models that I flew and probably in your 172. I'll try out Ant and Bill's suggestions and putz around with the cfg.
I think in other Carenado planes such as the 182 from what ive seen in screenshots, do have seperate 'dome' light and a redish 'panel' light. Owners of these planes might be able to confirm this. However the 172 just has the white dome/chart light :) I was just curious if any other Carenado 172 owners and run accross this issue and had edited it for better night lighting results.
