Carrier 2006 CVs

What does one have to do to get the carriers listed in "carr2006.zip" to show up? I have them installed into "AddOn Scenery," along with "carrier flatten files," and have put "carrier flatten files" above the "Carriers 2006" file in the addon scenery library. When I open the sim, and look for the carriers all I get under "Carriers" are "OceanFlattenFileCVXXX/location" and not the name of the ship. What's keeping them from showing up in the sim?

In the Go To Airport list type the letter "U" in the airport name box and the list will show all the "USS" airport names like USS Abraham Lincoln, USS Carl Vinson, etc.

Works for me.

Check the level of scenery you are displaying (ie 'Sparse' 'Normal' etc.) isn't stopping them.
IIRC some show up in 'normal', some in 'dense' and all at highest setting.

That tag doesn't just control autogen.

I've tried both but neither works. I also have "USS Stennis" installed as well, this may somehow be in conflict with the other two files. I have deactivated that scenery layer and am restarting FS9 to see if that works.

Here's what things look like since I eliminated all other carrier add-on scenery, pulled and reinstalled "carriers2006" and "carrierflattenfiles" and also installed the "sinking deck fix" for the rcbco-20 utility:

View attachment 69128

I backed way off on this view to show how the aircraft is sitting on the ship's wake, but the ship itself is a fair distance above the aircraft and the water.

I also have a scenery area in my "countries" drop-down menu called "Carriers." This has a number of choices in it, in another drop-down menu, each of them beginning with "Ocean flatten files" then "(CVN73) (for example), the airport name next to it is called "Ocean flatten file (CVN-73)"; none of them begin with a ship's name. Not sure what this means. None of these will display a ship, however, I have four others that do display and work properly.

Pending a real fix (which I don't know) you should be able to start your flight by disabling your joystick and slewing straight up to a height slightly above deck level, then slewing back down onto the deck. Then enable your joystick. (You should disable the joystick while slewing because it's all but impossible to avoid all lateral movement when it's enabled.)

Thanks, Mick. I'll give that a go. I've got all four versions of FS9 on the same drive, and these carriers work perfectly in the 1960s iteration. Last night I copied the entire "carrierflattenfiles" folder over from the FSSW60 "Addon Scenery" folder to the same folder in FS9. I also checked placement in the scenery library in FSSW60 and applied that to FS9 as well. Today we'll give it a crank and see if that made a difference.

I've tried something like you've mentioned already, in that I've created the flight as you can see, then went to "world" - "map" and then changed the height of the aircraft from 7ft to 77ft. Upon accepting then activating this results in the aircraft flying merrily away, even though I set airspeed at 0 knots.

EDIT - started FS9 but still have the carrier about 70 feet above the water, no matter what. I need to "drop" the ship that distance - or raise the aircraft - to get this to work.

Well, folks, I tried a complete flush of the entire setup, all carrier, ocean flatten files, and RCBCO20 as well, then a reinstall - I still get the same result. When this shows at the start of the flight, I go to "world" and use the "map" screen to raise the aircraft to (hopefully) the level of the flight deck - what happens, whether it's one foot or 70 feet off the wake it's sitting on, is it goes to full throttle. Should I be eliminating the ocean flatten files? Is that the problem? Is there anyone out there who can offer a fix for this?:isadizzy::banghead:

I have those installed (Carriers 2006) and in my sim they show up in the airport list under airport id: AC01 to AC18. If I select "AC14 - active runway" the sim puts me on deck in the landing area of the USS Stennis in the Straight of Juan de Fuca. I know this because I just did it.

I do remember (I think) having to install some "sinking deck fix" at one time. I still have issues with them, the most bothersome being that the ILS leads me to the flatten instead of the deck. So I use the ILS to get close then go visual for the last couple hundred feet.

The carriers work well enough that I have functioning ai on them.

Hmmmm, if the plane takes off at full throttle when you leave Slew mode, your wheels aren't in contact with the deck. Zooming off like that is the way FS acts when you put a plane into the sim (or un-Slew it) so that it's airborne. Even a fraction of an inch above ground (or deck) level will make it happen.

Did you slew back down until the gear settled on the deck with a clunk before you left Slew mode? If you did, then there's something more wrong than what I've experienced.

I'll check the airport ID thing to see if they show up that way. Right now, under that long "countries" menu, they show up under "Carrier."

Re: the slew problem - I use the map to elevate the aircraft, then leave the map via its button and go back to the regular external FS view. By the time that happens the bird is already in the air and buzzing away. I know you can use "Y" to move an aircraft around in slew mode external view; how can you make an aircraft go up and down in slew mode external view?

motormouse - just saw your post, will give that a try. In the meantime, more to find out - I installed the identical carrier scenery in FSSW60, on the same drive as FS9 - just went to FSSW60, typed in "AC01" and went there to a HARD DECK - bird shoots and traps just fine. In FS9, going to the same AC01 puts me well below the ship. I've got the same "sinking deck" fix installed into both main gauges folders on both sims - for some reason it's taken on the 60s sim but not in FS9 - I'm beginning to suspect the AFCAD files. I'd like to do a comparison of the files between the sims - where are the AFCADs located?

On my system the afcads are in the 'scenery' folder within my "Carriers 2006" folder in the Addon Scenery folder.

I have completely eliminated all carrier files from my FS9 add-on scenery folder - completely - plus gone into the scenery library and eliminated them there also. Just now I restarted FS9 to check on whether they're still shown in the sim. Yet when I start the sim and type in "AC" into the airport identifier block, as a double-check on whether or not they're actually gone from the sim - I find they are all still completely there. All of them. It's like I never removed them. I'd eliminate the entire Addon Scenery folder from FS9 and transplant the one from FSSW60, as they are virtually identical - but I'm unsure whether that might lead to more problems than it's worth. I'm still batting .000 here.:banghead:

I made some screenies so folks can see what's going on here:

This is what my airport directory looks like after I've removed all carrier files in the AddonScenery folder; this was done by eliminating them using the scenery editor, and also subsequently manually removing them from the Addon Scenery folder. I also pulled RCBCO20 and then reinstalled it, but NOT the carriers - yet. If you expand each of these you'll find the carriers are STILL THERE. Selecting one results in going there and winding up on the wake beneath the ship, just as before. It's as if I never removed the ships from the Addon Scenery folder. Does anyone have an idea about what is making these things so "sticky" in this sim?:mixedsmi:

That would be the AFCADS for the individual locations; think that will be your problem, do a search in your add-on scenery / scenery folder and scenery/world/scenery folder; they are the most likely places for them to hide!

Start a search string with AF2* ; you should be able to locate all AFCADS

hope this helps

Found the buggers, just like you said!!!:jump:

Went ahead and removed every single AFCAD having to do w/carriers, also in scenery\world\scenery, removed all other files having to do with carriers. Will now restart to make sure it's truly "flushed," then do a clean reinstall. Will report results.:salute:

A Complete Success!! Going into Scenery - world - scenery and manually deleting the ocean flatten files, and anything else having to do with the carriers, after deleting the other things mentioned, did the trick. After reinstallation everything works flawlessly in FS9.

I now have a candidate for the crankiest aircraft to fly - the Abacus Flight Deck 5 E-2C Hawkeye. This thing either remains firmly planted to the deck or taxies at 40mph - there's no happy medium. You wind up letting it taxi at 40mph and constantly toeing the brakes - a little jumpy on a crowded carrier deck! I will enter THIS problem in the appropriate thread in this forum!:salute:
