Cell phone explodes ??

There was a report on Fox news page of a Chinese man killed when his cell phone exploded next to his head. Reportedly, he had changed batteries to a charged one and the phone spontaneously blew up.

Assuming the battery was likely a ni/cad rechargeable, how would this be possible. Ni/cad batteries have no explosive properties or potential to my knowledge.

Anybody know if such a thing is possible ?

(of course, this could all be bogus, as the report came from China. . )
 
i have heard of other phones exploding while being charged. if i remember correctly though, they were fake-me-out phones, made to look like a name brand.
 
Most likely a lithium ion/lithium polymer battery. They will burn quickly and fiercely if not used properly. They do generate a lot of gas QUICKLY when burning, so if the pressure was contained somehow I could see it exploding. He would need to keep it in a thermos bottle or something? Not sure how it could get got to the realm of deadly otherwise.
 
Any idea what kind of battery would have an explosive potential while charging (or any other time ??). The article said that the Chinese police were looking into whether the phone was legit or a knock-off.

Nickel Cadmium batteries are subject to explosion while charging... in fact they are one of the most dangerous types of batteries available.

I took a NiCd battery management course in the Canadian Forces... most of the course focused on how to recognize impending explosions and how to prevent them from happening.

The Wikipedia page is pretty good, listing the primary causes of battery outgassing and detonations.

Not to get too far OT but.... I happened to stick a 9v Duracell battery in my pocket the other day on my way out to the garage. Don't ya know I felt something hot on my leg. I stuck it in my pocket with my change and a coin(s) shorted the 2 terminals. Boy do those suckers get :censored: hot fast. :173go1:

Thanks for the info - that takes care of my wrong ideas about ni/cad batteries !!
 
Cellphones and laptops are considered a VERY high risk in civil aviation.
There where already a few instances where laptops started burning in overhead bins.
They are almost impossible to extinguish!
