Voodoos

Me too Panther.

If you ever get out to Joint Base Lewis-McChord, there are a couple of Voodoos on display. One at the McChord Museum and one across the Interstate at Camp Murray.

By the way, do you know why all of the McDonnell fighters were named after spirits and phantasms? Ie. Phantom, Voodo, Banshee, etc.
 
Hey Dave,....I remember reading a long time ago Mr. McDonnell had this 'thing' for naming aircraft after occult/spooky type mystic creatures. The Banshee (I think) was/is a screaming type demon from Ireland.
Boy,...it must have been fun working at the McDonnell aircraft plant during the week of Halloween.

Haven't made it as far as McChord yet but if I do, I'll definitely check it out....
No, I don't know the Mcdonnell riddle of the "ghosts"...:ques:
 
I used to see these Voodoos flying overhead every day when I was a little boy in Niagara Falls. I remember my father talking about them very well. If any of you remember the old TV movie "Red Flag" there was a comment about the Phantom (which I also say every day after the Voodoos were phased out) being the Air Force's attempt to prove that "with enough thrust a cinder block can fly" - this was my father's opinion of the Voodoo almost verbatim. I had a school friend whose father worked with them and he also said they were unforgiving.

I remember when the Voodoo first showed up at Comox, B.C. My dad was stationed at Comox at the time, but like many men who were in the RCAF at the time he was still regretting the fact that the Canadian Government had abandoned the Avro Arrow program only to later force the Voodoo on them.

I had a high school science teacher that flew them when he was in the service.
Also, we've got home movies of three of them doing fly-bys in formation for an Enstrom helicopter celebration (Menominee, MI) back around '65-'66. Three of them in a delta. One pass with gear down. From what I remember, lot's of black smoke from the old engines.
 
One more Voodoo shot...

I must say that Peterson AFB museum keeps all their static display aircraft in excellent condition - they were repainting their F-106 when I was there...

That's how I remember it; lots of black smoke a MiG pilot could see from Moscow; the Phantom was like that as well. Meanwhile, he's some Avro Arrow footage for Mr. Mann. It's 2010 and you still see the Arrow spoken of on Canadian televison.

I love the double seater Voodoos from the outside.

The awfully cluttered panel, however, is an entirely different story...

Notice the size and prominence of the Angle of Attack indicator! This was just about the most important gauge for a Voodoo pilot.

Back in the 80s, while training on hand held lazers for lazer guided bombs, I spoke with an F-111 pilot after a pre-op brief on the days drops. After sorting out details on our lazers, TOTs, directions, etc., we spoke about past aircraft and weaponry and it turned out that he was an old Voodoo driver. He said a Voodoo would flip up quite abruptly if you didn't watch her closely.

Seems to confirm the importance of that angle of attack indicator.
