Project: Caudron R.11 heavy fighter
Hello Folks!
The Caudron R.11 was a rather interesting French twin-engined biplane bomber/heavy
fighter that came out late in 1917, designed 3 years earlier to substitute the
Caudron G.4.
Although it was initially used as a night bomber, its 265 lb bombload soon proved too modest for the time, its performance was remarkable (120 mph at S.L. and 821 fpm initial RoC), so the R.11 was used extensively as a bomber escort. Armed with 5 MG´s it flew circles around Berguet 14 bomber formations, defending them like a guard dog.
370 units were built. Power was two Hispano-Suiza 8Bda water-cooled V8 engines, delivering 220 Hp at 2100 RPM, with 8.17 ft wooden 18.47 degree fixed-pitch props that had a 0.75 reduction gear (1.34:1) and ran at 1556 RPM. Engine and propeller performance in the .air file comes quite close, which is rather pleasing.
This CFS1 version with crew and MG´s is coming along quite nicely, and I still have to put in the vbentral gun, eliminate a few cockpit bleeds, do the panel, put the registration number on the tailfin, and SCASM the virtual cockpit view.
Here are a few screenshots!
Cheers,
