Just said goodbye to my fourth DVD player in two years time.... :banghead:

My first DVD player was a Pioneer which I bought in 2001; big, very expensive (The original price was about $450, but I payed 'only' $240 for it) and rather limited as it could only play movie DVD's, but it did last until somewhere in 2007. Since then I've had three other players that crapped out in less than six months! Sure you pay only $50-60 for a new one, but the quality is terrible, even from big brands like Philips and Samsung.

I was so looking forward to finally having a free saturday evening so I could sit down on the couch with a bag of potato chips and watch 'The dark knight' on DVD with surround sound... :banghead: Guess I'll go get a new one this monday as the shop are already closed by now and I'll have to watch the movie on my computer.

And the old player? Well lets just say I vented my frustration on it and now even Samsung will most likely not recognise their own product. Never knew you could tear it to pieces with your bare hands...

Been there, done that, too.... Quality is absent on the newer stuff, which is supposedly better....... My last one, a Samsung, lasted about eight months before it became possessed by an evil spirit which would cause it to power up and shut down as it wished..... I didmembered it in short order after the last time I attempted to use it to watch a good movie.:rocket::icon36::hatchet::sniper::icon31::d

last year I bought a new 32" RCA HDTV and an RCA DVD player, guess what they are not compatible, the remote from TV will not see the DVD.
I called RCA and they were surprised by this also.
sorry is all i heard.

Im Cheap :redf:
i buy the $25.00 ones

That sounds familiar... Mine also couldn't skip scenes or load brand-new disks.. All I got was a 'no disk' on the screen after five minutes of loading..

The Philips before that had issues from the start; a really bad remote connection so I had to keep it less than a foot away from the player or it wouldn't work. At least the players inside my computer work fine, even though they are much older and have way more hours on them.

Yeah, I use my trusty computer to do all the DVD watching now... Although I may do like Henry and buy a really cheap DVD player. At least that way, even if it didn't last very long, I wouldn't have nearly the investment in it....

Some of the problems are not the fault of the players. The studeos that produce the discs keep upgrading the coding on the discs for copy protection etc. This will normally cause the player to choke on the disc and just sit there dumbfounded. If you have a higher end player you can get an upgrade online from the player manufacturer, transfer it to a disc and upgrade your player. This seems to happen every six months or so.

Get a PS3.. plays CD's, DVD's, BluRays, and with small extra deposit you can have 320Gb SATA hd on it..:friday:

My 6 year old Panasonic works fine... loads everything up and plays it like new.

I had been thinking about upgrading... but after reading this thread I should maybe re-think that idea!

I've gone to Panasonic for my last 4 DVD players (all still going). Also have a DVD recorder/burner that is Panasonic as well.

My blu-ray player is a PS3 (although I've asked Santa for a SONY blu-ray DVD).

THE DARK KNIGHT in blu-ray is hard to beat.... The special features on the blu-ray version include 2 documentaries on BATMAN TECH and THE PHYSCOLOGY of THE DARK KNIGHT. They were shown on the History Channel during TDK's theater run and were both entertaining.

Same here, my Sony, Sharp and Panasonic DVD players are still going strong. Even my very old region free Cyberhome $50.00 player still works fine.

They are seeing less use now that we have Sony and Panasonic blu-ray players in the mix.

I bought my Toshiba DVD/CD player about seven years ago. It's still going strong. Since it's an earlier model,...it won't play burned CD music disks made off the computer. No complaints.
