Here's what I did...I fired up AFCAD and made two very very simple airports along the N Korea and China border....the runways were about 200 feet above the ground...very simple. About 60 miles apart. Then I took off from the South Western most one and flew toward the North Eastern most one....basically following a line along the NK/China border. Lots and lots and lots of rolling hills...which is consistent with the elevations that Google Earth showed when I drug the cursor along the NK China border...eletations were below 1000 feet for the most part, and some areas were not that far over sea level....Rhumbaflappy's LOD5/7 mesh seems to depict this area pretty well.

I took a good number of screen shots and am uploading them to a folder on Photobucket. As soon as they are up, I will hop back in and supply a link to that folder so you can check them out.

The flight I took was along the south western part of the China NK border. The northern sections of the border seem to have higher elevations....I will set up a couple airstrips for that section of the border and report back with details.

The most time consuming part of installing Rhumba's LOD5/7 and 8 mesh (still need to write up the User Guide for that one) is the downloading. The install is the easy part.

You could also look at Global Terrain Mesh at Simviation

The whole package is large a little over 8 GB but you down load it in sections so you can get what you want when you want.

Most individual .bgl files are around 12 mb.

Its LOD 9 or 70m. It covers from N60 latitude to S60 latitude for the whole world.

It is based on Shuttle Radar Mapping Missions that were done a few years ago.

Its here

http://www.simviation.com/fsdterrainsrtm.htm

Read the read me and down load the file map to figure out which files you need for Asia.

I did not follow the instructions to install it.

Just take the .bgl files and put them in a folder in the addon scenery folder

C:\{path to flightsim}\FS9\Addon Scenery\{new folder}\scenery\{downloaded .bgl files}

activate them as you normally would in FS.

This way they are very easily removed or disabled if need arise.

I used multiple folders for the whole install

North America
South America
Africa
Euro-Asia (because numerically the file numbers stretch over the two continents in a line)
Islands
Australia

Each one is its own folder so I can disable or enable sections at will.

thanks DD, a great find too. will be fun to compare and contrast.
youve inspired me with the DH80, that's what this scenery quest is about.

news item:

Turns out I can go to FSGenesis and get a fall special of the Whole World on dvd for fs9-- at 9LOD-- for 50 bux or join as a lifetime galaxy member for 90 bux, both big savings.
Justin's mesh demos are great.

any opinions on the FSG experience? the last thing I paid money for was the maam sim dc-3.

thanks

everyone who has FS Genesis that I know loves it.

Its a good foundation on which to build the world.

Myself I don't have it but it has been on the list of things to get.

I went with the FSG world on disks and can't say a bad thing. The mesh is great, the install was flawless and it's nice to have the disks (plus you can get a jump by downloading while you wait for the mail).

The membership is a personal decision, but if you think it's worth "buying futures" then it has some advantages.

Also, note that FSG is bringing out a new set of mesh for the far north shortly that should be a huge advance over what MS gave us for the polar regions
