Looking for work? High flying adventure in the breath-taking Andean mountain range?

A small pilot-led company, CC Andean Airways, seeks partners in a venture to bring modern aviation to the cities and towns of the Andes. Needed are highly skilled pilots with icy nerves who can manage dangerous missions with competence and cool. Now, in 1954, the company presents another chance for those pilots who missed winning the Evita venture of 1949.

Prospective pilots should take advantage of flying a route through the Andes to demonstrate their skills. You might wish to purchase, lease, borrow, or otherwise commandeer an appropriate aircraft from another airline or perhaps directly from military sales. (Think Beech 18, DC-3, C-46, DC-4 and the like.) All sorts of liveries and pilot backgrounds are welcome. We shall gather at Willemstad, Curaçao to set up our aircraft at Hato Airport while enjoying the local beaches and bars. The actual routing starts at the nearby oil city Maracaibo, Venezuela.

The Event.
You initiate the run from Maracaibo (SVMC) and then fly cargo to other airfields in the prepared list, including a set of required destinations. The larger airports include Bogota, Quito, Lima, La Paz, and Salta. In addition, a number of smaller more challenging fields are on the list. You may design your own routing and choose to service as many of the optional fields as you wish within the fixed period of 27 hours "flight time." In addition you may land at any airport or off-airport location, but cargo deliveries count only for the designated airfields. All legs north of Peru observe a hard ceiling of 15,000 feet, those in Peru and southward observe a hard ceiling of 17,500 feet.

You cumulate a score for:

  • Elapsed time beyond the allotted margin (that is, cumulated flight time over 27 hours).
  • Fuel used in pounds.
  • Number of designated airports to which a cargo is delivered. (The minimum cargo delivery is 500 pounds.)
  • Total cargo weight delivered (in 500 pound units) cumulated over all legs.
  • Number of maintenance points incurred for crashes, etc.
At the end of the event, all pilots are rank ordered in each of the five categories, from best to worst. Each pilot's rank order scores are then summed across the categories. The lowest total is the winner.

Flight Procedures.

  • Fly in real time MSFS weather at a time of your choosing. The normal "realism" settings are in force.
  • Navigate using pilotage and dead reckoning as well as NDB and VOR radios. No DME or ILS equipment. No GPS. No moving maps that portray the aircraft's location.
  • Authenticate legs with the FS-Duenna flight tracking software.
Dates.
You may start any time after midnight UTC June 24, 2011. The official end is August 1, 2011. (If pilots request more time, the Committee will grant all reasonable extensions.)

Entrants.
You may register in this thread. Please give the relevant information about your aircraft and livery that you've selected and post a few screenshots for the gang. Then, at the start of the event, you simply begin a thread with your name on it and you can make the relevant tracking and authentication posts in your own thread.

The Rules.
A complete description and the formal rules are attached below and posted here.

after that incredible SWP tour,
we've been kicking back
here in the Pacific Northwest,
drinking a few beers,
working on the radios
and getting the big girl
a new face lift.
we had a job offer up north,
but i'm sure it can wait.
it isn't every day we get a call
to work in the Andes.
plenty of opportunities, i hear.

i'll post a pic as soon as the paint's dry.

I'm entering my Beech 18 in Merc Air livery (Milton's cargo variant). I did an around the world flight in it a couple of years ago and it has also flown the MacRobertson London to Melbourne and participated in the Evita so this kind of flying is nothing new to it. Looking at the paint, it's had a few bits and pieces replaced with used parts from other "less fortunate" Twin Beeches (less fortunate in that I parked next to them when needing a part).

From the aircraft description in FS:
Merc Air is an aircraft operating consortium. Its members embody the entrepreneurial spirit of such knighted heroes as Francis Drake, John Hawkins, and Richard Grenville. Not to mention Edward Teach, Henry Morgan and Jean Lafitte. These business principles are applied to modern air transport. The "Nitro Express" is used to transport "special cargo" such as "hunting and fishing supplies", usually well away from customs agents.

For this event, Merc Air is testing the waters for "bidness opportunities".

I love this sort of thing ... Evita ranked high on my list of all time favs.

Count me in .... you guys are the best!

Thanks!

BTW: that is a fine looking D-18E Willy!

Official "Writ of Intent"

As it happens ... I'll be passing this way on my route around the world.

Latest thread here: http://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showt...quot-...-third-thread-...-the-Pacific-Islands

I'm flying that route in the DC-3 (based on the default MSFS) that is a part of the Radio Range scenery download ... rr40.zip.

Different livery(s) and an extensive collection of period specific navigational equipment suited for circumnavigation of the the globe ... circa 1940 ... everything known, freeware only.

Should be in Venezuela shortly after the start of the event and would like to be considered as an entrant at such time.

Currently running with a bare metal finish ... I have contracted with Pan Am's Juan Trippe, who has been instrumental in adding my around the world route odyssey ... especially in the Pacific ... to carry the companies livery at least until my turn north, back towards the "States" at Trinidad.

Screen snaps of the Gooney Bird in both Pan Am livery and bare metal ... as well as what will appear to be a default DC-3 panel ... except for the 14 simicons in the bottom left hand corner in 2D and the installation of the four tank fuel gauge selector.

The simicons will open:

Long Range tank control panel ... fifth (ferry) tank no longer needed ... doubled default range (800 gal)

An RCA DZ2 Goniometer

Sun Compass

Misc Gauge Mini Panel (fuel stats, descent calculator)

Tuning for the AM radio sceneries in Australia and NZ (no longer needed)

Wind Driftmeter

Bubble Sextant

Front and Back E6-B

Relative Wind gauge (speed and direction)

default Radios

default Throttle Quadrant

default Overhead Panel

default other controls (landing gear and flaps)

Gone or replaced are the ATC ... GPS ... and Kneeboard simicons

Trust this plane is in compliance and if so you may consider this as an:

Oh! ... whoops, forgot to mention the co-pilot that will be "along" for the journey.

No worries ... I'll personally see her outfit changed to something less military like ... in keeping with the overall theme of the event.

Needing a ride for this singular South American shindig, I approached Mr. Juan Trippe, of Pan American-Grace Airways. He owed me a favor. He didn't have any of his bran new shiny DC-4s to loan me, so I told him I would settle for a slightly used DC-3. Well, he said he didn't have any of those sitting around either. I was about to remind him of “that thing” we did for him a while back (sponsored by Merc Air) when he picked up the phone and in moments was speaking to the field operations office in Buenos Aires. He hung up the phone and said he had an old “Panagra” DC-2 all ready to go, more or less. A DC-2! Of all the ungrateful … I told him I would take it. He made me promise to bring it back in one piece. Can you believe that? Who does he think I am, anyway?

Hey Salt. Be careful with the JF DC3. You have to buy the base pack and then buy the expansion pack to get all the models. I pre-ordered and got the expansion pack for nothing. Many do not like it, the VC being "cartoonish". I think it is fair. Has some problems, the service pack fixed some, but not all of them. The new sound pack with this is very good. I enjoy this model even with the problems. Great flyer.
Take care.

Request for clarification:
Is the cargo limited to the "maximum cargo weight" indicated in the table in Appendix A, or can the acft be loaded to MTOW with cargo?

Example: Default DC-3 has
Empty weight = 26200, MTOW = 16145, i.e. it can load 10055 lbs cargo+fuel+pilots. For a short hop up to 9000 lbs of cargo would fit.
Is maximum cargo limited to 6000 lbs nevertheless ?

Thanks.

And btw, you guys are CRUEL - I don't really have the time, but this is too good a trip to miss... :kilroy:

Hi Gunter,

For a number of reasons, we have set the maximum cargo weight explicitly--in the Appendix. That number will generally be somewhat lower than the difference between the MTOW and the Empty Weight. The figures are taken from published sources and reflect payloads that one might expect on daily commercial operations.

In your example, the maximum cargo weight for the DC-3 is 6,000 pounds--no matter which simulation of the DC-3 you choose to fly.

Hope this makes the event all the more enjoyable for everyone. We are truly delighted to have you aboard.

Official Registration

Looking to make a buck and hopefully establish a cargo route through the Andes with a SNCASE (Sud-Est) Se.161 airliner/transport to start. Air France was practically giving these away to LOT and Aviaco in Spain. I worked out a deal with Aviaco to be our proxy buyer (one airframe + spare parts), with the stipulation that we keep the red & white livery intact for the race event.

On the surface, having a four engined transport for this event seems to be an advantage. If any of the heavily laden twins lose an engine they are going to be struggling in the thin air. Since we have the uprated Pratt & Whitney R-1830's and not the original Gnome-Rhone 14N's, spares should not be an issue.

CCAA – Official Registration – DC-4 “Estrella de Oriente”

I was on the beach again, minding my own business, relaxing on the balcony of my current digs when there was a knock on the door. I roused myself and was greeted by the landlords daughter who produced a fat manila envelope addressed to:

Jeff Williams (jt_dub)
Petit Plage
Grand Case, St Martin, FWI
I hesitate a moment before opening the envelope and spilling the contents on the kitchen table. There are several documents in the packet. I quickly read the handwritten note from my old pal Sergio in Havana clipped to what appears to be some kind of newspaper notice. The newspaper article describes the CCAA startup. Sergio says it is perfect for me and as a senior manager with Cubana de Aviación he can help. Cubana has received it’s new build DC-4’s from Douglas and they are going to surplus the converted C-54B.

The fat document is a bill of sale for a DC-4 named "Estrella de Oriente." It is currently on the ramp at Princess Juliana airport.
Also enclosed is a gold pin which I immediately recognized as my own wings which I had slammed down on Sergio's desk at our last meeting.

Good old Sergio, nice that he doesn’t hold a grudge.
It takes a week to secure financing and finalize the sale of "Estrella de Oriente."
Then a shakedown flight across the Caribbean to Curaçao.

<<--- 1000 th post
(was saving it for something special)

Fairchild entrant: C82 packet
Cruzeiro do Sul livery
Jay McDaniel flight model and recalibrated instruments in original K.Mitchell panel.

Will be using Activesky V6 weather.

Is an L-749 too new for our little company to buy? Had a strange 3am meeting with some Howard guy, arranged through a friend 3 times removed, and it seems he has contact with an airline that wants to dump all theirs. I think he said something about getting all new 1049 models, wants to beat some Juan person at his own game.

Howard's fire sale could be our gain:ernae:.
