Cockpit Fix (Canopy)

Have a plane that the canopy doesnt open or close? A fix I discovered
just tinkering, go to a same model plane that has a working canopy, find the
cockpit file,(for some its in the "model" folder) copy that one after you have deleted the non-working cockpit file.

Paste your working file in the plane folder, make sure you rename the
file appropriatley,(look at the xdp file). If the xdp is named,"P40N3_xxxx"
and your copied cockpit is,"p_40f_cockpit",new one should read,"P40N3_cockpit".

I know alot of you guys have tinkered long enough you've probably
allready done things like this, but for the "puter-unsavvy" Gents, its
really easy to do and it gives your P40 (or other) a working canopy!

(This will also work on any plane with a messed up,or no-view cockpit.)

Dont forget to delete the BDP file!
New one will regenerate on restart. Good Flying!<<S>>

:kilroy: Hmmm.... up to a point. You might equally find your new cockpit six inches behind the prop or buried in the fuselage with a very odd viewpoint. It all depends on how the original modellers built their aircraft and VC models.

But if you have a working VC which fits well in the fuselage, with a sliding canopy that works, then we'll call that a result!

The FM2 by Gramps is a good example of that. It has a cockpit that is kind of basic but I have yet to find another cockpit that will fit into that plane. For some reason the way he made the model it always puts any other cockpit behind where it is supposed to be and the result is a visible meshing of the new cockpit and parts of the fuselage. For planes like that I looked for a way to make anything forward of a donor cockpit invisible by hacking the m3d file. No such luck but I bet some of the g-max guru's might know how to do that!

The model p40 I used was the us P40f 10 and used it on "Karen". It seemed to be fine. Also
used it on the russian p40 and didnt notice any mismatch. Thanks for the heads-up on
that though Gents.<<S>>

Most of the CFS3 aircraft will accept donor cockpits but as Hairyspin said some will not due to something in the building process. Some of the bombers will even also accept donor gun stations. The tail gunner station from the FP Lancaster is a great improvement over the gun station of the freeware Lancaster.

It's simply about two thing:

1. The physical localtion of both the interior and exterior model which is hardcoded into the m3d depending on where the original designer placed it into the virtual space. If the two don't match you see parts of the external model in the VC.

2. The existance of a node "cockpit" inside the external model. Every part that is under such a node gets hidden as you enter the VC.
If the exterior model doesn't have such a node no parts get hidden thus interfering with the VC.

Either way, nothing one can do to fix it without the source files.

Yep,really didnt like the freeware-Lanc for that reason. What even got me started on this "surgery"
was I had downloaded the Russian repaints that have the missing cockpit. Got to brain-storming,looked
over the files and came up with that solution.

Didnt recall anyone posting anything on that particular item,so thought that might help a few that
were annoyed by that problem.(I'm a "convertable" flyer,so the canopy not opening on my p40's
really made me claustraphobic!)

I love to tinker, and its great when someone has something on the board to tinker with, but even
alot more satisfying when I figure something out for myself. Thank you Gents, you've been a wonderful
audience. I'll be here all week!

What version of the freeware lanc? The newest ones have a more detailed pit, better than the FP if I remember correctly. Oh, yes I am a bit biased since I made the cockpits for that plane ....:d

This is the FP Lanc with a much more finished gun station. This gun station works perfectly in the freeware model above and is a nice upgrade. If I remeber correctly you can't swap the same number m3d cockpit file for file. I swapped these one at a time for each station until I figured out which one it was.
