Col Toomb Ace Of Aces....Or Was He?

I went through my old Air Progress magazine for 1972...it showed a picture of a very polished Mig-21 with 13 white American stars on its fuslage, next to it was a NVA pilot standing next to the Mig-21 dressed in a American Flightsuit, boots talking with the ground crew at Kep Air Field outside of Hanoi. The story aledged he learned to fly in Paris, smoked marlboros, and was a Catholic. I have no doubt there were maybe a very very few aces in the NVA Air Force at that time. But nowhere could I find so far any evidence to prove the existed of a Col Toomb..there has been much retroric about him...but this is the first time I have found any description of him. I will continue to search into his aledged history...but it is somewhat doubtful that evidence will come forth in the future.

From some research I did while doing skins for the Alpha Sim Mig-17, Col. Toomb did not exist....at least not under that name. Toomb is not a Vietmanese name. The best speculation was that "Col. Toomb" was in fact a combination of two NVA pilots who shared planes, both of whom were credited with a number of kills..and the kill markings of both pilots were added to the plane...creating the allusing that there was a NVA pilot of expectional skill/luck.

It's generally accepted that the highest scoring NV ace of the war was Nguyen Van Coc , with 9 claims - seven of which have been verified by the USAF.

Colonel Toomb was indeed an imaginary figure, created for propaganda purposes. He was a composite of Nguyen Ngoc Do (6 claims) and Nguyen Van Coc, they often flew together in the same unit.

Sure thing! All you have to do is mosey on down to Tuscon to ask "The Duke", he should still be locked up until 2013. So you have a few years if you're busy. :costumes:

I looked at the MCNBC story......I noticed there were all (D) and only one (R) listed on the ' line graph '.....interesting.

True, but it goes in cycles. The last few years, more Republicans than Democrats have been getting into trouble.

Remember, Ted Stevens (R) of Alaska was just convicted of similar charges.
 
Back to Cunningham: Lawd, I truly hate to say anything negative about a Navy flier, but from what I've heard, he didn't have all that far to fall. It has been said that he thought he was entitled and when there was praise to be handed out, he was not at the back of the line. Overall his navy carreer was mediocre and he was not known as an outstanding leader. Some great fighters were also outstanding men, Col. Scott (God is My Co-Pilot,) Admiral John Thach and Chuck Yaeger come to mind, but not all. This takes nothing away from his skill as a fighter pilot, but it must be said, he was an idiot for what he did. I know this is not going to be popular so let me go ahead and apologise. It is All Hallow's Eve and I may very well be possessed.
 
Well, he's not the first or the last...chalk another round up to good ole 'human nature'...every man has his vices, some just control - or conceal - better than others. :icon_lol:
