Comments on the Freeware Gems Thread

So many true gems emerging...
It's probably best to keep that thread "clean" without too many comments.
But I could not help saying that after Wild Bill's enthusiastic endorsement of the Yak-18, I am hooked!
<Ctrl>-E? Forget it!
"L" for landing lights? Puh-leaze!

If you need something to really focus the mind, this is for you...
Part of the readme:
• make sure you let the engine stabilize and heat up to at least 110°C before operating at higher rpm. Failure to do so will result in engine damage and/or power loss.
• easy on the throttle - don't make fast changes in rpm
• during descent make sure the engine does not cool down too quickly by cutting power and leaving the cowl flaps fully open. The engine instruments must be checked on a regular basis -

etc

I tried this sometime ago but got distracted by other add ons and then forgot about it....it is very good...what scenery is that Charl..dont tell me... its an Austrian scsnery?

I can't get the gear to retract unless I hold down the "G" key. Then as soon as I release it, they start retracting. What do I have to do?
I had some trouble installing it along with the update. Had to do it manually.
When I ran the auto installs, they seemed to go into the ether! Gone, nowhere to be found. So I did it manually.

@ Tom:
Did you check your pneumatic system switch (#41, right down side of the panel, only visible from VC or the "whole panel" sight) is set?

IIRC, the gear is operated pneumatically...

Cheers,
Markus.

Пожалуйста / Pa'shalusta !

Glad I could help! :wavey:

And I'm even more happy that my humble recommendation raised your interest.
I must admit that I'm no friend of too comprehensive procedures and checklists, and I'll certainly never ever sit at my PC for half an hour programming a FMC, but I love an aircraft that recommends some more skills than just knowing how to make it sound louder...

I know it's a thin line between "too simple" and "deterring system depth", but this Yak (as well as the SF8 Sabre, of course!) embodies the perfect balance between both ends of the spectrum.

Hehe I was hoping it wasn't just me...thanks Markus!

Naki, the scenery is another of the "gems" lot, totally brilliant Czech scenery:
Great freeware airports:
Jesenicko v2
jes2.zip on Flightsim, jes2_051121.zip on Avsim
Small, impeccably modelled grass glider fields set in wonderfully done photo-real terrain. Truly a "Must" for the light-GA flyer!

zview.php

It may be because of the surrounding hills, but it feels like one of the very few FS airstrips with a runway that follows the topography!

This thing is incredible and adds a lot to the realism. However when I hit the lights switch in the 2d cockpit, fs2004 ctd's. Anyone else have this problem. Does the gaugesound.dll have anything to do with it? I didn't install it because I have had problems with that module before. Is it from a sim older then 2004?

tobob,
did you put it in the main FS folder? The gaugesound.dll goes into the main FS2004 folder...should work fine. It will crash if you put it into the modules folder like I did. When I first came across the gaugesound.dll, I put it into the modules folder because it was a dll type like other ones that were in the modules folder, and FS crashed whenever I started it up. I puzzled over this, and I realised that it was supposed to go into the FS main folder (after consulting the readme- again!), so I took it out and put it into the main FS9 folder. I've had no probs with it since. Hope this helps?

Thanks Mark, I will give it a shot. That would explain why it's not working correctly. Sometimes I get excited and don't read the documentation very well. Thanks again.

Dan

Went back to Austria to try out this SAAB and it's pretty darn good.
The General in the backseat possibly would've preferred his more usual bizjet but would never admit to it...;)
More excellent shots here

EdGeneer's KGFL is just big enough to take that Cessna.

Nice job all round.

I do get some shimmering with the 32-bit textures.
Is this a mips issue too?
Is there a batch utility to convert the files to include mips?

I like this Sovereign as well Mate, hoping I am not hijacking your thread here.

IFR hop from CYQA Muskoka to KPLN Pellston ....

The CYQA scenery is new by a Gent from the Flight Ontario team and is freeware available as of today @ Flightsim.

No problem feel free to jump in here...
Muskoka? Thank you Google Earth I learn something every day ;)
That Sovereign does look a bit, well, pregnant or something I always thought.
Does offer standup room though.

Looks like a very interesting addon.
Anybody tested it in FSX ?

Answering to myself: I finally had the time to download and install this FS9 bird in my FSX Acceleration hangar. The plane works quite well ! :jump:
Observations:
- despite being .gau format, all the gauges are compatible.
- I had to edit the alpha channel of only one texture, the only one with "transparent" in the filename, to make the prop and windows transparent again (all in the same file)
- one of the lights triggers the fire engine effect, but in this plane you're supposed to manipulate all from the VC, so forget about the "L" key and everything will be good :)
