Comparing flying to racing

IMO, flying is not nearly as nerve racking and hectic as racing.

Europeans should appreciate this.

This is only a 3 lap race. Imagine this pace for a full race/mission.

racing usually doesn't involve an opponent shooting at you, though neither does flying...
unless you're in combat.
 
I agree to a certain extent. From start to finish racing maintaines a much higher intensity. But for peak intensity/hectic/nerve racking a combat flight sim wins out. But even at that, even in the most intense dog fight in say Mig Alley for example (imho still the best pure dog fighter of any sim to date), I can still get interupted, pause the game, carry on a conversation and jump right back in without missing a beat. In Grand Prix Legends (my racing sim of choice) not a chance in hell. I'm off in the very next corner (if not sooner). Racing sims in general, and GPL in particular require a much higher level of focus and concentration. For me anyway.

Since we're comparing flying and racing I believe that flight sims (if flown in what we simmers like to call "full real" - no magic radar or other aids) will make one a better driver in day to day traffic by improving your situational awareness. Where as racing sims and games do nothing constructive for your day to day life. For example we've all seen the scene that's all the rage in movies and tv shows these days where they show a view out the car side window as they're driving along and then some truck or something comes out of nowhere and t-bones the unfortunate driver. How many of you fellow simmers have seen that and said to yourself "How in the f is that possible? Speaking for myself having been an avid simmer for 15 years I never get "jumped" in my car these days. You know the situation where yo go 'Whoa where'd he come from!' Now watch I'll get taken out on my way home from work today.

BTW rich, in GPL at the end of the race the computer will actually reach out through the screen and punch you in the nose if you behave that way on the track! :)

Mine too Todd. There may be better graphics around these days but nothing beats GPL for immersion and the 'sweaty palms' factor. I just love those '60's grand prix cars.
 
I had GPL. When I learned I had an aggressive high risk cancerous tumor last year,
I dumped most of my hoarded stuff in preparation for the worst. GPL was in that dump.
I saved CFS3, FSX, GT Legends, GTL, GTL2, Race 07, Dirt and the bestest racing of all, Nascar Racing 2003 Season.
sheesh! Now I'm in the best of health.
 
Comparing video games to video games, some game play can be intense.
Bringing cars and the autobahn into the picture, you'd have to bring in airplanes and the heavens for comparison.
