Crashed...well almost literally. After installing P3 last night and preparing to retire, I went to set defrag but I got an error saying drive c: could not be degragmented. I'm running winxp sp2 on a SATA HD, Intel P4 3.2 ghz, 2gig ram, ATIN radeon HD3850 AGP. Anyway, I figured a reboot would solve the problem. It did, by giving me another problem. Now it won't boot into XP or safe mode. I'm gettin unmountable boot volume error. I'm asking here because of the coincidence of afyer installing P3 this happened. BTW, I had 26 gig free space left over on that drive. Thanks.

I believe there must be at least 15% free space on the drive for defrag to run. It will run with a bit less but it will prompt first cause it will not be the best outcome. Check your system restore calendar too. You may have lost all stored points. Happens when memory gets too full.

Sorry to hear about your problems cpirrmann. Sounds like a real bummer. I had weird stuff like that happen on my old pc so I know how frustrating it can be. Did you do anything different in preparation for the P3 install ? What's your hard drive capacity ? 26gb free space is not a lot. Maybe clean it out ... if you can boot ?

Pulled it out

Well, I managed to pull it out and get my hard drive cleaned up and sorted. Now I'm back in the jolly world of the great war. I'm not sure how it got corrupted, but now I know what to do and how long it will take!

Unlucky CP but nothing to do with us, that's PC world for you.
If you have errors and install stuff, eventually poooop.

Best to do a scandisk rather than a defrag for possible drive errors.
