Charter Member 2011
I'll upload soon eight more textures for Libardo Guzman / CalClassic's Curtiss C46A Commando, converted to CFS2 in SOH library.
A ROCAF Curtiss C-46D-10-CU
Unit: 6 Sqn, 20 TG
Serial: 620
From a picture found on Wings Palette
attachment.php

An American Curtiss C-46A-20-CU, made from a picture of a plane kit found on the web
attachment.php

Another Curtiss C-46A-40-CU based upon a plane kit decal sheet. I probably painted the nose art a bit too big,
compared with the pictures of the original model, but I was too lazy to make it again. Sorry...
The original noseart is one of the tallest I've ever seen.
attachment.php

A CurtissC-46A-45-CU
Unit: ATC, USAAF
Serial: 7342 (42-107342)
This C-46A was assigned to a unit of the Air Transport Command (ATC), USAAF at Chabua, India, circa 1944,
and was employed on supply flights over the 'The Hump' to China.

A Curtiss C-46D-5-CU called 'Smiley's Airlines'
Unit: 4th CCG (Combat Cargo Group)
Serial:42-101211
This Commando flew supplies to Andaw, Burma on 11th March 1945. It crashed on March 19, 1945.

Two repaints for a Curtiss C-46D-15-CU and a Curtiss C-46D-10-CU, as displayed in various American Museums.
The C-46D, 44-77635 was at the Pima County Air Museum on December 18, 1979.
It had been restored to World War II period olive drab over gray.
It was given the name Syracuse Shackrat

All textures, except the Chinese C-46, are based upon an original repaint by Manuele Villa: FS2004 USAAF Curtiss
C-46A 'The Tinker Belle.'
Most of the job comes from him, and I just added some cut and paste elements.

Excellent work! Glad to see that I'm not the only C-46 guy here!

Just thought I'd mention that I have had a paint of "Smiley's Airlines" for FSX in .dds on the back burner that is almost finished. Started it a couple of months ago, but ADHD kicked in and it's been sitting forlorn in the back of the paint hanger. (also have several other C-46s & a R5C completed that I'd been mucking about releasing) This might just be the impetus I needed to upload 'em.

Hello Willy,

Never too much repaints for our planes.
I had found interesting pictures on the web of C-46's during Korea war, but most of them had black under surfaces, which discouraged me to try and repaint them.
Far over my limited skills..

I' now half-retired, and I'll have a bit more time to work on a series of repaints waiting since a bit of time in my drawers.

François

Hi Friends,
I modified the original texture for the Commando's crew, adding the typical USAAF leather jackets, USAAF hat badges and Ray-Ban sun-goggles, but leaving the original faces (Libardo Guzman's wish), if someone is interested I can upload the modified bmps (2, with or without goggles).....

By all means, Manuele!

Do upload your repaints, crew members dressed in civilian uniforms look kinda' out of place in a WWII combat flight simulator!

Thank you very much François!
Another set of lovely repaints for this baby!

Cheers!

A new entry has been added to Add-Ons Library, category CFS 2 Skins Add-Ons

Description: This texture set allow You to change the crew uniforms of Libardo Guzman's Curtiss C-46 Commando with a more "military" ones. I added the classic USAAF leather jacket, USAAF hat badges and the classic Ray-Ban sun goggles.

Simply overwrite the old file in Yours texture folders. If You want to use the sun goggles rename the related file.

Good try Manuele!

Excellent idea... Notwithstanding... those wings look suspiciously like US NAVY wings... THEY ARE NAVY GOLD!!
ARMY AIR CORPS (and even todays's USAF wings are SILVER)
Also, pilot wings are not worn on the hat... by regulation, what goes on the hat... either Garrison cap... (above right) is the US Eagle
or overseas cap - "c*nt* cap" as it is even today called... rank or unit crest as in the photo in lower left.
Rank insignia also worn on both shoulder epaulets... both shirts and jackets
The wings are worn above the left chest pocket on shirts... and left upper chest on jackets... regardless
Just a bit of military trivia.. from someone who wore this stuff for over 23 years... btw the USAAC wings (little ones on the shirt collar... always on the left.. [btw, in the last few years, collar insignia have been changed in the angle in which they are worn... ]
right side for rank... enlisted uniforms are quite different...

Did a quick "show'n'tell" for you here:

Hi Gaucho,
Thank You for the pic, I just uploaded a revised zip, but unfortunately the original texturing give no chances for a better detailing (no way to add chest wings and the upper part of Eagle) I simply added the neck badgers and a bigger eagle on the Garrison cap.

Maybe the pilot textures can be replaced by others...

The color of the uniform can be changed probably... light tan shirt... or brown leather jacket...
I'll see what I can do about finding a similar disposition of things... faces can be changed...mmm
sounds like a fun thing to do...
Ciao for now... hope you are doing OK healthwise...

Hi Carlos,
I'm OK now, thank You !!!

You can do everything You want, I only did an attempt, but please DON'T change the faces : when Libardo Guzman given to Tom Gibson (and me) the Commando's source files and the authorization to modify the original textures he asked me to not modify the pilot faces (he and his brother).

:wavey::wavey::wavey::wavey:

This is possible...

Here is a quick one of what can be changed...
unfortunately, the pilot's badge can't be put in... for the texture appears to be mirrored...
Of course, the garrison cap Eagle has to be lowered... I think... I'll check

Hi Carlos,

It doesn't work......

C46P.JPG

The lower part of the jacket is "raw" mapped on the top/right square and I cannot find the top of the hat (where is the upper part of the Eagle).....
If You know / have GMax I can send You the pilots for an easier work.....

:wavey::wavey::wavey::wavey:

Pardon my ingnorance... what is H2????

Hi Carlos,

It doesn't work......

View attachment 29318

The lower part of the jacket is mapped on the square at h2 and the hat.....

Can you clarify this last statement? seems incomplete... "and the hat"????
What is H2???
Where are the backs of the pilots mapped??? The front looks like it can be worked on... the hat seems ok in front...
at least the eagle is in the right place...

Carlos

What amazing details!

I am sure going to have a lot of fun walking inside of this C-46 cockpit and take a digital picture of pilot and co-pilot.

Probably they will sign my autograph collection booklet, too! :biggrin-new:

Good Grief!
