After the occupation of the "Free Zone" of France in November 1942, the Vichy Air Force was dissolved and its aircraft confiscated. A number of these were appropriated by Italy and served as home defence fighters.

Obviously slightly subject to interpretation, as the paintschemes used on Italian D.520s were largely determined by the way in which the French had interpreted their own markings - often wildly inaccurately.
