Deadstick Project

Hi All,

I have another proposal to put forward. I've been wondering since the 'Retro' theme seems to be sweeping the FS9 community I thought I'd put this project suggestion out and see what happened.

An Operation Overlord/Deadstick Glider pack for FS9.

Featuring the Main glider types Horsa, Hamilcar, Hadiran & also a Hotspur training glider. Then maybe packaging it with Scenery for Pegasus Bridge, Normandy and an RAF Ringway (Central Landing Establishment). Just an Idea ATM anyone interested?

Interesting idea. I do remember Jeff Marsh of Padbury Hanger fame was one developing a Horsa before he retired. He did resurface a while ago and resurrected some of his older projects, the Proctor mainly. Haven't heard anything recently though. I know he lost some of his sources, don't know which though.

If you dig in the CFS2 library you'll find some gliders by Baldy, maybe others.

There is the Auster Glider Trainer by Dave Moly over at Britsim.
Jeff Marsh is still around, but has yet to complete his P40 Prentice & I have yet to update his FD for him (waiting for a Pilots Notes copy)

Yeah I saw the cfs2 models whilst researching the project. What i was considering was indigenous fs9 models possibly fsx project ( i'm told its better for glider ops) i might try giving the horsa a shot myself ive already tried knocking up some training repaints for the exsisting horsa (screenies to follow) just to see what i could do with it as far as detailing is concered and to brush up on my painting techniques (yes there is a pun in there somewhere...lol)

Also I've just tried the Hamilcar the flight dynamics need completely reworking for FS9.

Paul Clawson has done the Waco Hadrian and Airspeed Horsa for both FS9 and FSX.
They are at Flightsim, just search: Paul Clawson Glider

IIRC didn't most of the gliders depart from Keevil, Colerne, Tarrant Rushton and Membury, to name but a few.
As for training, my late uncle trained at Woodhall Spa with 1st Airlanding Brigade, 7 KOSB.

there were about 20 departure fields if i recall everywhere from Gloucestershire & Wiltshire to Norfolk for Operation Overlord operations and Operation Market (Market was Airborne element, Garden was the Ground link-up as memory serves...)

would be good to have Pegasus bridge (The original now stands in a museum right next to a newer 'Pegasus bridge' ) it was here as a schoolkid on a school trip i went into the Pegasus Café and started speaking to a veteran who had helped in that little battle for the village... at that same moment i decided that as soon as i could i'd take up parachuting, have even jumped with a few Veterans and have 1 Jump out of a C-47 on a Static Line over the Netherlands as part of their Market Garden celebrations, no wonder i love both France and the Netherlands! i can only imagine what it must have been like to jump out of a C-47 at a risky altitude, while under fire from pretty much everything the Wehrmacht had in it's arsenal!

Might be able to get some material for you guys over the next fwe days/weeks. My Grandfather was a Horsa pilot, he passed away last week and I think my aunt ended up with his photos. If I can I'll have a look through them for anything from his Army days and pass it on.
