Designers Pre-release Vietnam for CFS2

No Dice

Hello All,
If any of ya'll are interest in sinking your skills into this project
your help will be much appreciated.

I am converting Al Simms great FS2004 scenery, to CFS2
I could use some help by a mud pusher to replace the Airport3 type roads with ones that follow the terrain
Mission writers could have a really great time with this project.

http://www.thefreeflightsite.com/Vietnam_Projects.htm

Al has even sent me most of the api macros used.

I have converted most of the flattens and am working on the land and water class, coastlines ect.
Overall it is a really a nice piece of work, I really need help on those roads though.

Please take a look, something new for CFS2

Dave

If I help it will cost ya. I'll take it in trade. Vietnam for WWI. I want train tracks and new roads. Also someone to help get my airfield textures to MRs standards. I want to get my Belgian Campaign finished and the Tondern Raid.

Someone jump on the bellows, I need a bigger fire.:biggrin-new:

So what did you have in mind?

That sir, I leave up to you........
You tend to think "out of the box" , every project needs that.

As far as WWI, I will drop you an email.

What I need most is someone that understands more than I about setting up Ground2K so I can replace the airport style 3 roads with
roads that will follow the terrain. I can add the standard CFS2 road, but everytime I try to change the texture to someting else I get fits.

I have changed the others but the roads and railroads are killing me. Maybe I will just try flatten areas, But I would still like to replace them.
I can make the texture transparent, but then I have no road.....yet the stock CFS2 road looks like crap when replaced with Ground2k.

Then what we all need is a mission writer.....I just push mud.

Hey Dave,
Alright ground 2k is installed. I've never used it but now is as good a time as any. send me a copy of what you are working on and I'll go from there.

Have you tried new textures for the roads? send me some pic so I can see what its doing. mostly so I don't repeat the process.

Dave,

I would avoid using G2K.

Mesh clinging roads can only be drawn in G2K as VTP1 lines. Besides being frustratingly unstable, the VTP1 compiler has a bug that creates artifacts when compiling VTP1 lines.

Is it a simple texture format problem?

CFS2 will only accept FS70 bitmaps for ground scenery, or (some) DXT1 bitmaps. All lines (rivers, railways, shorelines & roads) must be drawn as VTP1 lines, whereas FS9 uses VTP2. Marting Wright has some old bitmap conversion programmes to use for creating new ground tiles or line textures but it's pretty mush trial & error to get something that looks OK in the sim, & much of the time compromises have to be made.

The definition for any lines or ground tiles in CFS 2 is pretty poor, I'm afraid the resolution is hard-coded into the game. IIRC Onnogras made some better railroad & sun-bakes tarmac road bitmaps when he released his DEI airport packs, that might be a start point for textures.

If you want to use G2K, you can create custom lines & add them to the listing used by G2K. You have to use the CFS lines section (scroll right down to the bottom). I've attached my own custom lines text file from G2K for reference.

But a much better solution might be to contact Sander & use his CFS2 Autocoast3/SBuilder combo for compiling new scenery from FS9 source data.

"Think out side the box", in this case we need to break the box and build a new one. Read that post and see which way it gets you thinking. I have an idea but not the knowledge of the programs.

I have no problem with Ground2K for the land, water masks and coast lines. I can insert the CFS2 stock roads and have added my own Runway textures.

I will look at what UncleTgt sent over, my problem is in adding new road and railroad textures.

I will get back with ya'll later.....gotta get back to making a living .

Dave

yeah that is the issue. along with the coastline. read that thread and you'll see.

groundmaker can add roads but only in small areas. I don't like the overlap look they have. Hence why I would like some help to do MR type textures. I have a new dirtroad texture in my WWI scenery. give that a try.

good old timewarner is giving me a fit right now. I can't get my emails open. they must be working on the server again.

I have to take my Wife to her appointment for her Lyme. so I'll check back later.

IF you need to contact Sander he is a member of my Developers Association and I can pass reasonable messages on to him, he has told me he is not active in the sim area any more but he may be willing to help with questions and I am certainly willing to try to help make the contact. Good luck, Vietnam is a much needed area for more attention.
