Long-Time Enthusiast
Good-day all,
We are all aviation enthusiasts, right? And, we have channeled much of that enthusiasm toward Flight Simulator. Some of us are real-world pilots by trade, others by weekend, and still others...just here and there, not as often as we'd like, but times are tough, and we are thankful to have wings at all. Still others only dream to fly in the real world. But we all share the commonality of enjoying, from the comfort of our homes, the freedom of the flying experience. It is not only a hobby to us, it is a devotion. Now some have taken that devotion to the next level, and ultimately, for the love of the hobby, and those who share it, have devoted more than just "spare time", but near their livelihoods, helping all to enhance the experience.

So, being a small, very, very, small community to start with.....

A. Some just enjoy it for what it's worth.
B. Others choose to put back into it, what they get out.
C. Even others put more into it, than what they get out.

We all have the ability to CHOOSE how much time, effort, and monetary support we ourselves put into the hobby. And one is not better than the next. (Thank-God!)

Those who support it most deserve a big thumbs up, and even a little bit of our pocket change. We need serious help if a few of our nickels is more important than the communion around such a niche-hobby. We're small enough as it is. If we want to protect or hobby, we'd better try to get around our ego's.

So, support the freeware devs, and respect their wishes.
If possible, also the donation-ware devs.
And if you can afford to, please, support the payware devs.

At the end of the day, at minimum we have more in common, than we don't. Let's move on together!

Nice words, thank you, they probably needed to be said. I enjoy all types of models...freeware, donationware, payware...and I don't expect any of them to be perfect, not even the payware. I'm not going to count up how many payware models I have, but it's more than 2300 US dollars worth. Oy, and then there's the photoscenery. I have 1.4 TB's of payware photoscenery, and I'm about to get the new VFRHorizons package. This simulator gig is an incredible treasure, and I want to thank all of the people who have done their bit to make it what it is. THANK YOU.

I have really only been hyper-critical of one model, but I actually bought it before I ripped it. Unlike some around here who see a screen shot, and then rip it. They haven't bought it, and some don't even own the sim it was intended for, but they rip it, and keep on ripping it, and then defend their right to be rude and disrepectfull when someone calls them out on it.

If you haven't bought it, you can make suggestions on how to make it better, but you haven't paid for the right to be a j@ck-Ass about it.

+1 This is a fantastic hobby. Some that do do, some that can't enjoy and support, some who complain at everything are ruining it for everyone.

I for one appreciate everything that people do to enhance the experience. I do not appreciate those that tear down other peoples work in public. If there is a complaint, use pm or their support forums.

Very, well spoken, Joseph.

Being involved in a past hobby of radio control, club president, flight instructor etc etc for over 16 years, you basically just spoke of our clubs devotion in direction. Promoting it. :applause:

OK - thats all very nice and would be great in an ideal world but at the risk of being unpopular - am i right in thinking...

No dev is forced at gunpoint to be a dev?

No dev must promote his product on SOH or respond?

No dev compains if we all say we like a product!

Devs often allow the same negative comments on their own forums.

One thing i will say (again as said on the DC6 thread). Since coming to SOH i have spent more, not less, on FSX addon products!!! Im only put off perhaps 2 in 10 released products from reviews from our friends gathered here. Guys i thank you for your honest views and observations. Devs i thank you for your dedication and for putting your works of art in front of us. I am pleased to praise so many of you and your products on this forum, and on infrequent occassions question what i see. Most of you very professionally over come my fears assocated with a purchase.

Forgive the dissent, but I find these preachy posts tedious and patronising. (Even the ones that don't quote scriptures.)

I know what you mean Mark, but in this case Joseph is simply railing against certain attitudes that no one needs in an enthusiasts family forum like ours.

Look what happened to the Avsim "Flight" forum...closed due to excessive unpleasantness and when it reopens on the 29th it will be a clean start with all previous posts wiped.

+1!

All developers, freeware or payware use their personal or family time, abilities and talent to provide and support what is the common denominator in our hobby: the FSX add-ons . Payware developers, at least those which are members of this community provide the goodies at prices which are not making them rich, but rather keep them walking (IMO at least), if at all. Everyone, regardless if he is doing free or payware development, at least deserves a thumps up for his effort, and surely not punishment often driven by our own harsh language.

All their products have their pluses and minuses, however without them this community will diminish over time. Products that we try (freeware), or buy (payware) have a potential for improvements, but to perform them any person needs not only more time but also the proper mood. Bashing is not a way of giving anybody, inlcuding us the mood to do any work at all.

Next time we post against a product and possibly humiliate a fellow member of this community, which by coincidence is here for the same reason we are here, the enjoyment of virtual fliying, we have to honestly ask our selves just two questions :
  • Do we provide any value to the hobby with our own action?
  • Is there another, humanly accepted way of communicating our problem or displeasure?
