DH-4 repaint

There's a repaint of the observation plane version of the DH-4 for the US Postal Service on Flight sim (Hurrah! I thought!). Only it doesn't work. I've loaded and reloaded both versions up on the site pasting the section that needs to go into the cfg file, renumbering the [fltsim=X] version.

Has anyone been interested enough in the DH-4 to know what's happening? I get a second DeHavilland entry on the menue but nothing happens whan you go to it and the program just closes if you click on it.

The files are dh4obser, dh4muspo, and dh4mpo.

description=This model is a tribute to 2nd Lt Frank Beach, Observer for the 354th Observation Squ. The De Havilland DH-4 was was the only US built aircraft to see combat during World War I. When the US entered the war in April 1917, the Aviation Section of the Signal Corps only had 132 aircraft, and all were obsolete. Colonel R. C. Bolling was commissioned to study current Allied aircraft designs being used at the front and to arrange for their manufacture in America. By the end of the war, 3,431 had been delivered to the Air Service. The Dayton-Wright Airplane Company built most of these. Of these, 1,213 had been shipped to France, and 417 had seen combat.

OK the "M" is gone from "sim=" as per former email. Now I get a black screen. Click on it and CTD. If you use sim=DH-4 Observation that will CTD.

Haven't a clue.

Now I have the paint is for another DH-4 not for the one on FlightSim.Com even though the description insists that it is for that DH-4 Observer.

Groan.

Got some work to do

Here is the whole file.

This Mail Plane had a big old V-12 Liberty engine in it with a max HP of 449. We have 1649 cu in. The cylinders have a 7 inch stroke and a 5 inch bore so some more engine values have to change. Need to dig out the Britannica again.

The fuel tank was 135 gallons (not 31). She's supposed to have a range of 700 miles. 31 gallons will not get her from KFRG (hell route part1) to Lehighten PA!

She's supposed to cruise at 110mph. They fixed the wings (lengthened) to give her more lift; so, I think I will have to play with the lift scalar.

2000 RPMs at take off 1800 to cruise. May have to refigure the weights.

There's a fuel guage that doesn,t work so I need to find a new one for the 2D panel that will read 150 gallons. I once put a gauge in a 3D pannel but it's confusing and a real problem. It also need a compass! I think the ADF is off the Stinson and the Sperry autopilot is off the DC-9. I need to find out if they have anything but a radio. Don't think so. Saw one with a radio tucked away behand the pilot.

Got to load pannel studio and containment manager.

I need to find route maps of the St. Louis to Chicago Route c1925. Same for New York to Chicago via Cleavland.

Comments? Please!

Yep post #3 explains that the original DH-4 must be downloaded from here at SOH. Look for dh-4.zip by NCGent, add the repaint and paste this in aircraft.cfg

Compression_ratio=8
number_of cylinders=12
max_rated_rpm=2000 //cruise rpm 1800

The max and min design Manifold pressures are another two. And since the rebuilds reduced the the landing speed, there has to be new stall speeds.

The information on the web is very sparse. And info is hard to find. There used to be good sites devoted to old AC engines. Now Google just leads you to stuff for sale. Information super highway my a**.

I looked at the JN-4 folder, Tuor2112. I think it's the one I have as the replacement cfg file. You have both mps set at zero. That liberty has a wopping big manifold.

Working with flight dynamics sure is a mystical art form. There is a lot of info in the airfile that isn't in the aircraft.cfg. As this is a simulation I fudge the data entries to get the performance values I actually want. I use Advanced Flight Simulator Data (AFSD) to give me on the fly numbers for HP,range,speed etc-

http://pagesperso-orange.fr/hsors/afsd.html

This site also has the airfile editor AirEd.

Yes I have both on disks with what I hope are correct pass words. I was told long ago that the airfile entries are hardly important in FS9. I wish I could tell you which designer told me that. I've been into the airfile trying to modify the standard Electra into Earhart's. While I got the 2D panel fixed up I couldn't get anybody with real know how to fix the 3D. No one was interested.

Just like with this problem. Who cares about old Airmail planes?

The first route was Chicago to Bryant OH to Cleveland. Next came Cleveland to Belfonte PA to Long Island. Leighton was an emergency field not a stop. Then came Chicago to Iowa City IA to Omaha. The next two routes out to the coast got really dicey.

That's why the DH-4 a short range high altitude bomber needed major modification. It needed more lift and a landing speed slower than 75mph (more like 40). The fields were short and difficult and emergency fields were worse. And it needed range and that means Gas. 31 gallon tanks were not the thing. Am I remebering right 0.6 pounds per gallon. 135 gallons is then 81 pounds?

It's been some time ago.

Out West they used Junkers 13s for awhile.

AFSD and AirEd don't need passwords.The airfiles are mostly but not totally overruled by the aircraft.cfg so you sometimes need to work on both.

The VC can only be changed by re-modelling the original aircraft. You can swap around gauges though. Look for l10eae01.zip by Charles Wood.

Changing the scalers in the aircraft.cfg is an easy way to modify flight dynamics look for-

[flight_tuning]
cruise_lift_scalar=1.0
parasite_drag_scalar=1.0
induced_drag_scalar=1.0
elevator_effectiveness=1.0
aileron_effectiveness=1.0
rudder_effectiveness=0.25
pitch_stability=1.0
roll_stability=1.0
yaw_stability=1.0
elevator_trim_effectiveness=1.0
aileron_trim_effectiveness=1.0
rudder_trim_effectiveness=1.0

fuel_flow_scalar = 1.000000

power_scalar=1.0 etc

IIRC AvGas weighs about 6.0 lbs a gallon

Ha, ha! 6 pounds a gallon. I was only off by a decimal point. Brain is going soft as I get old. I'll have to visit that site. I remember paying for AFSD. Easy gauge helps with the 2D but where should I search for l10eaeo1. zip? I once put a 2d gas gauge in a Junkers 37 3d panel, but it took forever.

Look for it at flightsim.com and I just use regular notepad to open up the aircraft.cfg and panel.cfg.

Use copy/paste to swap out gauges from other model's panels being careful to avoid typos. The gauges are put onto specific textures in the VC so there is only a certain amount of resizing and repositioning you can do. You can do this in the sim and just reload the aircraft to see the changes.

Its getting more common now for gauges and controls to be actual 3D parts in the VC. Obviously these cannot be changed except by the designer himself.

Here's the Panel Studio re-do of the panel 2D only. I stuck in the Sopwith compass and a special fuel gauge made for me many a moon ago by a designer on this boad "dsd" If I had all the corespondance I'd know his name. He was a great help and very encouraging. The fuel guage reads up to 200 gallons. If anyone knows of a 150 gallon main gauge let me know. In any cvase they both work.// This Panel.cfg file created by FS Panel Studio panel editor utility - http://www.fspanelstudio.com

Looks like I got some invisible gauges in there behind some of the others. Have to clean that up.

I think I'm done

:wiggle:Well just in case someone is interested in my panel travails I'll include the panel config.

First I think the 2D panel is cleared up. Second I think the 3D is about as good as it's going to get. The gauges are in place. I think the virtual cockpit had a basically flat panel; so, I could use Panel studio to put on the two gauges. I used the Sopwith compass because I didn't have a Neuport compass. An instead of the Ford Trimotor gauge for the left tank. I used a special gauge that registers 200 gallons for the total fuel.

Again, if any one has a better idea or a 150 gallon total fuel gauge that looks period, this one is just sort of plain, let me know. It has to be a total fuel gauge because otherwise it just doesn't work.

Panel Studio is not alive any more, but I have my registration number, and mine works! Hurrah! So the link it shoves into the cfg file is no good.

I was wondering how the Abbacus panel and gauge maker is. Anyone have a comment?:guinness:
