Hi all,

Was just wondering, anyone here collecting die-cast model race cars ??

Probabely because i have been a modeler all my life, i.e. put the stuff together myself,
this whole world of die-cast car models have passed me by until just recently...

Indeed a whole new world opened up for me ! :isadizzy:

I have been feasting my eyes on this little gem almost all day after it arrived this morning :

maserati.jpg

I still can't believe the quality of this masterpiece. It's a 1957 Maserati 250F 1:18 scale made by CMC.

There might be a possibillity to drive it too in rFactor someday. Eagerly watching the development of the
1958 GP cars by Charlee Skywalker. Too bad it's a bit like watching the grass grow..

So, anybody here can share my enthusiasm for CMC, Exoto, GMP, Kyosho, BBR and alike ??...

Me, i am totally overwhelmed and might well become an addict ending up in a cardbox with
nothing as die-cast race car models as furniture. :d

cheers,
Jan

i have a few..most are NASCAR (no COTs)...i also have a 427 Cobra.
my favorite is the #6 Folgers Team Caliber Mark Martin T-bird..

I have a small collection, my favorite one is one I got 2 years ago off of a driver hauler from Mike Wallace's race team, I got it signed by all 3 Wallace brothers in a day.

My enthusiasm for "Diecasts" is almost non-existant, I'm a hard-core modeller and tend to either scratch build or go right over the top using a model kit.
However, I'll see if I can find the 1:18th Maserati garage scene I did for a customer (They're always right and so is their money!) using a couple of CMC 250Fs.:kilroy:

Is that the Tamiya Ferrari F2004 Wombat..?

I have that same kit somewhere, but with the clear bodywork. Still need to finish that someday soon.

Have a large collection of 1:18 scale die casts, mostly Bburago (Which will be gone soon) and some Minichamps, Revell, Maisto and Autoart.
My favourites are the Revell Auto-Union 'Stromlinienwagen' and the AutoArt Ford Focus WRC. From Maisto I have the Le Mans winning Audi R8, BMW GTR and Porsche 911 GT1.

Some smaller scales as well, with a collection of assorted F1 models. One quite unique Stewart-Ford signed by Jos Verstappen. There's even a NASCAR truck hiding somewhere which I picked up at a sale long time ago.
No photos though as I'm busy packing for my upcoming move.

Thanks for sharing, guys !

Remarkable, Wombat ! How did you guess i bought the Ferrari 2000 ( Elite ), and Ferrari GTO 250 1963 ( Kyosho) as well ?? :)

So, what are yours ? No die-cast i suppose then ??....

cheers,
Jan

Did have a collection 1/43 of Mclaren F1 road/race cars, but sold them, plus a few others

I have do have Bentley signed by the 2003 Le Mans winners - Capello, Kristensen and Smith. Also Porsche 956.

Moved on to die-cast aircraft models.

Oh my goodness ! That's insane !:isadizzy:

Sure hope that's not going to be my foreland !

Thanks for the link, Ed !

Hey Wombat, still love to know what models of yours we're looking at....?

Btw, my main interest goes to F1 cars from the 1960's. Anybody know of 1:18 F1 die-cast models from this era other than Carousel1 Lotus 38 and Eagle Weslake and CMC Ferrari 156 Sharknose ?

Sadly enough i seem to have to come to the conclusion that, much like it is the case with computer race games, this particular F1 era is heavily neclected... Where are all those magnificent and beautifully shaped Ferrari's, Lotusses, Coopers, Brabham's, BRM's.....?? ( ok, i traced down a nice collection in 1:43 scale from SMTS but they cost around $150 a pop ! :isadizzy: 1:18 is a much nicer scale too... )

I still loath the day that some clever dick thought that race cars should be equipped with a barndoor at the back and a snowplow at the front... :blind:

Sad thing that progress seems to always has to come at the expense of beauty.

Any 1:18 1960's F1 model i might've missed ???.......

Thanks very much !

Cheers,
Jan

I had a few...
But sadly they don't survive military PCS moves....perhaps after I retire...:kilroy:

Wombat - Those rock! :)

1&2) Ferrari F1-2000, based on TAMIYA Kit 20048, 1:20th scale, built for a client, more fabricated and turned parts added than I care to remember, some 200+ hours build time.
3) Ferrari 250GTO in 'Fly Yellow', built using Model Factory HIRO 1:24th scale resin and white metal kit plus a few of my own 'extras'.
4) Ferrari 240GTO cn4399GT 'Maranello Concessionaires', another MFH based build.
5) Ferrari 250 GT 'Lusso', based on a BRIANZA 1:12th resin and white metal kit, built for a client who owns the real thing.
My favourite 'Road' Ferrari of all time .....................:applause:

Those 1:43rd SMTS models are not expensive for a factory built model, but compared to a 'Made in China' item they would appear so.
SMTS (along with many other similar operations) have gone under, while the much vaunted (by themselves!) 'BBR Exclusive Hand Builts' are now assembled in China.

And that is why there are few 1:18th 'Classic' F1 releases, the minimum production run required is in the 5,000 +/- area, more usually double that number.
The people who have the Australian 'Supercar' franchise are locked into base production lots of 25,000 units, which appear in release blocks of around 8,000 units, as in 8,000 HSV cars, 8,000 Stone Brothers cars etc.
BIANTI have the nerve to sell thses as 'limited release' items, when we had 'Southern Cross Miniatures' operating several years ago our built models were limited to 100 units onlt.
Sadly, the only cars to be produced today are aimed at the mass market, big numbers are the most important thing.

I build for a small 'exclusive' circle of clients who are collectors of the 1:1 vehicles and are prepared to pay my rates, often I scratch build a 'one-off' in 1:12th scale for these people, who I charge accordingly. However, I'm very Catholic when it comes to building for money, if I must use a kit base I'll do so.
I need the money to fund my 911RS restoration project .......... :jump:

PS: 1:18th scale stems from the old 'Imperial' system, 1:144th - 1:72nd - 1:36th - 1:18th, which has it's roots in 'Model Railway' scales.
The TAMIYA 1:20th is the 'Japanese' F1 scale, and seems to be accepted by the latter day fraternity.
A few years ago MFH issued 1:20th scale Ferrari 156 'Sharknose' models in both 120 and 6o degree versions, along with the Ferrari 801.
Done in resin, white metal and photo etch they were brilliant models but never sold very well ...... wrong scale!
So much so the MFNH re-tooled them as 1:24th scale and promptly sold out, anything from that era they released was always done in 1:24th, a 'Universal' scale.

Jan, this is the project I worked on with a like-minded friend.
His client wanted a 'Maserati' workshop diorama and cost wasn't a problem.
We ended up using three CMC die-casts to do this, and even then I 'upgraded' the stripped one.
In retrospect I should have re-sized the fuel tank rivets as well, but 20-20 hindsight is not much use when a job is finished!
All the rest was scratched up between the two of us.
I wanted to knock the shine back on the paintwork but was out-voted!!!!!
Happy client ........ and two happy bank accounts!!!!

Thanks a lot for this car modeling insight, Wombat, very interesting indeed ! I have been a modeler just about all my life, paper, plastic, balsa, later resin and white metal, mostly aircraft. But it is obvious i know diddley squat about car models ( did build the Tamiya 1:12 Lotus 49 and Lola T-70 many, many years ago. Pretty exited about getting my dirty hands on both of these long gone kits at eBay. Nostalgia rules! :mixedsmi:)

Totally flabbergasted by looking at the Brianza catalog ! :isadizzy:

Those MFH models look amazing too ! ( of course not aware of these companies, thanks for mentioning them ! )

I suppose MFH is strictly resin and white metal and only kits, and no 1:18 scale, right ?

The models you show are absolutely gorgeous, Wombat ! I am particularly at awe with the immaculate paintjobs ! :applause::applause::applause:

Pity about all the various scales. Thanks again for explaning about them. Now that i have my first 1:18 car models i must say i quite like this scale. I do intend to try a few 1:43 as well. Understand your comment about the SMTS models, they *do* look terrific and worth the money.

I suppose that 911RS of yours is 1:1, right ?...Congrats ! ( i used to be the proud owner of a 1952 MG-TD, my heart still skips a beat whenever i see one... luckily only about twice a year :))

Thanks very much again for your post, Wombat, enjoyed it a lot !:ernae:

Cheers,
Jan

WAAAAAAA!!!!!! Drop dead gorgeous, Wombat !:applause::applause::applause:

Nice job you have ! :)

Must've been great fun putting it together ! Me want too ! :wiggle:

I loved making aircraft diorama's, 'the Verlinden way' . I gave up '3D' modeling in favor of digital modeling because of my back problem and eye sight not being what it used to be.

But your superb Maserati garage scene certainly is awe inspiring !

Many thanks again for showing the photo's ! :ernae:

Cheers,
Jan
