direct x question

If and when I get a new computer , I would like to be able to run FS9 for it's historical planes and Microsoft Filight if and when it gets released, and Rise of Flight and anything new that comes out.
I know FS9 will only run with direct x 9c and the newer sims run with direst x 11. Is there a way to have both direct x 's and switch back and fourth depending on the sim your running?
Also the next to last post on quad cores has me confused, can you just go ahead and run FS9 even though you have a quad core or is there something you have to do with the other cores? The other posts on the subject made it sound like you don't have to do anything ,that FS9 wil only use the one core and the other cores will run backround programs, so FS9 is devoted to one core.
If you have a powerful enough computer do you still have to shut down backround programs.
I konw this turned out to be two separate questions, sorry about that, but I would like to be ready when and if I get a new computer.

Can't answer the first part of your question, don't know enough about Direct X I'm afraid.

Simple answer to your second question is ...... no. If you have a powerful multi core PC it will be more than capable of running FS9 without you doing anything.

What those posts were discussing is that it is possible to use the extra cores to run separate addons, if you have the know how & the confidence; I consider myself to be more than averagely computer savvy, and I'd certainly hesitate before I got into those kinds of areas - might check that payware programme out though.

DX11 is backwards compatible with DX9. FS9 runs on DX11 with no problems.

For the most part FS9 will run full tilt on modern computers without shutting down any other programs. That of course will be dependent on the system you buy. If you buy a POS then expect poor performance. If you have a fairly well built system built for you, there will be no problems.

ok I'am dumb

Just to show how dumb I am, but whats POS mean? And I should stay away from duel vidio cards right?

POS means Piece of **** <--- 4 letter word that starts with S.

There is no reason to stay away from dual video cards assuming you are talking nvidia and running SLI. They will not help or hurt FS9 or FSX.

They may help other programs you could run.

Thanks guys

Thanks guys ,you cleared up some questions I had. I remember one thread about direct x 11 giving people problems with FSX and just wondered if it was ok to run it on a new computer.
I also now know what POS means, what you don't learn here is just amazing.

That was due to FSX being published before coding for Direct X 10 /11 was finalised;
the Direct X 10 'preview' mode within FSX was culprit; think it sort of got fixed or written out of Direct X 11

Thanks Motormouse

I was wondering why the problems with FSX and Direct X 10/11. So the problems resulted from DirectX 10/11 codeing not being completed.

Please do not associate DX10 with DX11.

DX10 was beta at best and was never finished. When Aces Studio was scrapped so was DX10. The successor DX11 was built off of DX9 with some DX10 knowledge thrown in.

DX10 was not compatible with DX9 hardware. To run DX10 you had to have new hardware that supported DX10.

DX11 was backwards compatible with DX9 hardware and DX10 hardware.

DX11 comes with Windows 7 and is part of the operating system. It can not be removed.

Thankyou Dave

You really did a good job clearing up the whole Direct X mess, thanks so much.I have a thick head but you helped thin it out a little.I'am sure when I get a new computer I'll still have questions, but due to finances ,I'am going to run this 9 year old antique Dell till it dies.

another Directx question

I just got my monthly Microsoft Download Notificatins and it has download the latest dierct X . When I went to the site there was a list of things Directx related, among them two which said directx11.
Should I download DirectX 11 with and older computer and older vidieo card? Would it make any difference, in graphics or frame rates? And if I should download it ,which one of the list should I download?
Bottom line , I don't want to mess up anything.

If in doubt, don't!!

I never let Microsoft load any updates to my machine, unless they are ones I specifically want, heard too many horror stories. If your PC is working ok now, don't download the new version of Direct X - I don't think it will make much difference either way, but better to be safe than sorry.

Thankyou Andy

Andy you may have saved me a lot of aggravation (don't think I spelled that right) ,anyway I owe you one my friend.

As was explained to me, DX9 is not forward compatible from winXP to later OS's, tho W7 and DX11 may run XP programs written for DX9. I've had BAD experiences jumping on the latest DX versions so as my understanding don't update DX9 without planning on replacing the OS and some hardware.

Thanks Madog

Thankyou for confiming Andys advice, not that I thought he was wrong ,it's just nice to know I've got a second confirming opinion. And now I know that Direct x 9c is not forword compatable.
