Disastor averted!

SOH-CM-2024
Just finished a defrag on my scenery downloads disk, a 500GB USB external. It has a little over 280GB of files on it. Not all scenery. I use Ultimate Defrag 2008, and did a "Consolidate" defrag. Only check mark was on "Put Directories close to mft." That was my mistake. I think.

When I went to look into the scenery storage folders, 3 of them, I got an error popup window that said "folders/files or directories corrupt/unreadable." All my freeware FS9, FSX, and military downloaded scenery files, nearly 1.8GB of stuff downloaded over the last 4-5 years! Gone!, or so I thought. I have Win 7 HomePrem now, and it seems to have an automatic file directory repair scheme built in. I unplugged the drive, then plugged it back in. As the file search started, that happens whenever an external drive turns on, (XP did this, too,) a repair tool window popped up, saying it could try to fix the directory. Of course, I said yes.

It worked! :applause::applause: All my files are again accessable. Whew!

Phew:isadizzy: glad ya got em' back. Maybe it's just coincidence, but I have read quite a few horror stories here and on the FSX side about folks using that utility and actually losing an entire drive because of it. Doesn't give me much of a reason or desire to try it. I'm still using the built in defrag with Win7.
