Do we have a Swiss Bf 109E?

I just came across this on wikipedia, and thought it would be a unique facet of the war to portray - since when did a flight sim allow you to experience WWII air combat from the SWISS side?

During the first months of the war, airmen and anti-aircraft soldiers saw only sporadic combat; it was on 10 May 1940, when Germany commenced the drive into the west, that the Swiss army as a whole was mobilized a second time. At the onset of the campaign, German military aircraft first violated Swiss airspace.
In September 1944, the last Swiss airman died in combat, shot down by an American P-51 Mustang while escorting a crippled U.S. B-17 Flying Fortress to the Dübendorf airfield.[SUP][13][/SUP] During the entire war, 6,501 Allied and Axis aircraft violated Swiss airspace, 198 of which aircraft landed on Swiss soil and were interned, and 56 of which crashed.[SUP][14][/SUP]The first serious combat involving the Swiss Air Force began in June 1940. In six days of aerial battles, eleven German aircraft were downed, with a loss of two Swiss aircraft and three airmen killed. Following these incidents, on 6 June, the chief of the Luftwaffe, Hermann Göring, protested the attacks, claiming that most of the German planes had been in French airspace and that the Luftwaffe had entered Swiss airspace only by mistake. Germany demanded financial compensation and an apology by the Swiss government. In a second, more pointed demand on 19 June, Germany stated that they viewed the air battles as a flagrant act of aggression, and if these interceptions continued, Switzerland would face sanctions and retaliation. The next day, General Henri Guisan ordered all Swiss units to stop engaging foreign aircraft, and on 1 July 1940, the Federal Council apologized for possible border violations by Swiss pilots, without admitting any had occurred. On 16 July, the German government declared that the events were settled. Engaging aircraft of the combatant nations was prohibited until October 1943, when strategic bombing of Bavaria and Austria by the Allies became an increasing likelihood.
Swiss aircraft also intercepted U.S. aircraft who were off-course, or whose crews preferred asylum in Swiss internment camps over German or Italian POW camps; they were then forced to land on Swiss airstrips. When the bombers did not cooperate or even fired at the Swiss (who were using Axis-type interceptors), they were shot down.

two questions

I downloaded the Bf109 in Swiss markings ,but the prop blur is awful.I'am not good at screen shots but it looks more like three wide ripped colored rags than the normal prop blur that my other planes ,including two German 109 Emils have.
Also it has a tail wheel lock that your supposed to engage with (I think) shift+L but even though I checked the controller assignments and thats what it has for the tail wheel lock ,when I try using that command nothing happens ,the tail wheel lock message stays.
You can still take off by making sure your in easy mode and the tail wheel is centered ,but I wonder why the command doesn't work.
Of the about 100 planes I have ,I think it's the only one to have a tailwheel lock. The others just have a parking brake. So any ideas on how to fix these things? The plane is so pretty I hated to delete it but although I tired a few things ,like run the DP nuker which only worked temporally ,(fixed the prop blur then next time I flew it was back ) I ended up deleteing the plane.
The other question concerns the D-Day marking for the RN Tarpon I have. I put the two files in the texture folder of the British TBF but they won't show up. What am I doing wrong?

no idea must be defective , maybe a master in here and lead you on how to fix or fix for yee and see if a demand is out there for a proper skin of such ,

[SUP]Unfortunately, the model used is quite dated, now that I've got the maw Emil, there's no way I can go back.[/SUP]

Does the aircraft steer easily on the ground when the tailwheel lock is supposedly off? It may have the function but without the model having the animation built in. If the tailwheel is not animated there's nothing you can do without the source files - it's got to be built into the actual model using c_wheel.

Fascinating account of an uber-neutral country getting involved in a shooting war. This is what I love about this forum you learn so much. Thanks gecko!

Sounds like you need the services of our dear own ndicki here! :sheep: (How's THAT for volunteering somebody...:redf: )

That's been the best part of cfs3 for me - finding obscure aspects of the war and recreating them. If I can figure it out, i'd like to set up permanent spawns in the gsl in my install over Switzerland ireland, and Spain so that if you wander into those areas, you may be intercepted. Just trying to track down appropriate skins first. Spain is pretty well covered, but I can't find much for the Irish and especially the Swiss. As far as I can tell, C.202 and Bf 109E and G were used frequently by the Swiss.

OK it's fixed

I managed to fix the problems with the Swiss 109.First I went into the aircraft config file and found the line that said "tail wheel lock" and changed the number from 0 to 1. That elimated the tail wheel lock message. The tail wheel has full animation and steers easily on the ground.
Now for that ugly prop disc ,I looked at one of my other Emil's config file ,found prop and saw the MOI was 28.9 where the Swiss 109's was 25, so I changed the Swiss 109's MOI to the same, 28.9. Now I have a perfect prop disc with out that ugly rag look.
Mind you I had no clue what the heck I was doing ,I just was experimenting and it worked.

I don't think that would fix it. It sounds more like you have two files for the prop texture in your install, one looks good and the other doesn't. Cfs3 randomly chooses one of them every time the game loads, meaning that sometimes it seems fixed, and others it doesn't. You'll have to figure out the name of the texture that is being used, find both of them (or more) and delete the bad one(s).

Well so far so good.

I've tried the Swiss 109 a dozen times and so far so good.
The times it was ok one time then back the way it was ,is when I tried the DP Nuker. So time well tell I guess.

just for the heck of it

Even though the planes prop is still good I thought I'd check for any files that were duplicates and found none. There is a prop file that before I changed the config file I just deleted, but that didn't do a thing.
But still after now at least 20 times checking after I changed the config file ,the prop and tailwheel lock are just fine and the plane flys just like anyother CFS3 plane, and prop texture is fine, so keep your finger crossed if the prop goes goofy again I'll let you know.

Daniel, might be able to help you out?

Oh yes! Please! She looks great, and appears to be from the right time period for the incidents with the Luftwaffe. I think I've got nearly everything you've released added to one install or other, would love to get a chance at this one too! Goodness knows how many of these little gems you have squirreled away...:applause:

Hi Gecko

You're right on the Bf109E's and G's. AFAIK, although there were testflights with the MC202 and there were some contacts between Swiss and Italian authorities about purchasing some of these birds, it didn't happen in the end.

The Swiss ariforce also flew some MS406 and Bf109D's. Most of the 109E's were licence-built in Switzerland.

But there were also some other planes that were tested by Swiss pilots. Many allied pilots whose planes were damaged over Germany or Italy tried to make it across the Swiss border for an emergency landing or bailout. Many of the planes were then repaired and used for testflights.

After the armistice in 1943 a few Italian pilots escaped to Switzerland with their airplanes.

Cheers

Interesting, I'm learning a lot here. Also, I found some Swiss MS.406s by Nigel, so it sounds like between those and the Emil we will be in pretty good shape. It looks like the skin is for the West 40 E-3 released in ETO, based on the MAW E-4. It seems the Swiss used the E models into the 1950s, but got rid of the G-6s years before that as they weren't of very good production quality.

Yea it's the W40 E-3, skin needs tweaking, but won't take long!
Did this out of my own curiosity a long time ago, didn't think there would be any interest for it, guess I was wrong! lol

I've got interest in just about anything related to these birds, and if I've not heard of it, I'm interested when I find out.
