Dornier Do24T3 Luftwaffe and Spanish SAR flying boats

Shessi

SOH-CM-2025
Hi Folks,
Just uploading a Dornier Do24 T3 flying boat. Two versions, one a Luftwaffe Seenotdienst Search, observation and rescue aircraft, and the other a Spanish SAR version, for FSX. Updated for FSX by Erwin Welker.

Cheers

Dornier Do 24

Hallo Shessi,

thank you for the redone of this fine bird.
When I was a little boy I was in hollydays at Mollorca and than still see the Do 24 based at Porto Pollenza.
If I will remember they did not have the gun turrets.
Would it be possible to make a model with out these turrets?
I have begun to work on a 2D panel based on the fine picture done by Gaucho.
It still needs some tuning.
I downloaded the german rescue scene but in my FSGW3 version of FS2004 it seems not be visible. might be there a problem between FSX, FS2004 and FSGW3 ?
Yours
Papi

If they have been "updated for FSX" then that usually means that the textures have been converted to DDS5 (.dxt) textures, which FS9 will not recognise. That and other changes can and will probably prevent it from working in the older sim.

That said, though, this is still a FS9 aircraft, not FSX native. Therefore there's a FS9 base model out there to use instead of this repackaged version! :)

Do 24 and Luftwaffe crashed aircraft scenery

Ian,
the Dorniers show and fly well in Fs9, what I meant is that the downloaded scenery Lauftwaffe crashed aircraft scenery,

Hi Papi,
Strange?? The scenery was designed for and used in FS9, in fact I only use it in a FSGW3 installation, so I know it works, also 50+ people have downloaded it, and no one else has reported a problem.

The textures are just DXT3, so no issues there. Just unzip, and place in the Add-on scenery folder in FSGW, initialise the scenery in the sim to add to the list, and go and find it! Try deleting the generated SCENERY.dat file in that folder, it will be re-generated and may cure your problem.

Interesting story of you seeing the Spanish Do24's. There were many versions of the Spanish SAR Do24's. Early ones kept all the turrets, but later to allow better rescue access they removed all the turrets. Others kept the middle and rear turret and removed the front one, and still later replaced the front turret with a small observation dome. So, with all the turrets fitted, it is not totally inaccurate, I have spent enough time on the Do24's so will now move on.

A very successful design, the Do 24, and a good rendition of it as a flight sim model. I saw a real life specimen last year, very impressive:

Thanks for all the work on the port-over and in FsX without any of the updates it probably displays fine. However in FsX Acceleration it has a prop issue which makes all auto-gen disappear as you look through the prop disk when the props are turning...

If anyone could modify the .mdl file to eliminate the issue it would be a keeper.

Hi Roger,
Always the way, it's difficult covering every angle. Erwin did the FSX work, and I don't normally fly in FSX, in my basic FSX it's ok.

The actual spinning prop disc uses a completely transparent material, so it it must be down to the prop tex. Try substituting a good spinning prop tex that works in FSX with A, and if that fixes it, then someone could upload a prop tex for this installation. let me know.

Cheers

Have the same prop issue as Roger. Using FSXA. DX9. Have tried a couple of different prop textures with no luck so far.

If someone knows the cure then I'll change the mdl. The prop disc is transparent, so I wonder how that affects it's transparency in FSX with A?? Does the prop disc have to be a certain alpha level or colour?

Shessi

It'll be the Z test level of the transparent material for the props at fault. If you set the Z test incorrectly (you may well have to fiddle with it to get it right) then the transparency will also make any material beyond it transparent as well.

I had this problem earlier in the week on a blister hangar. The settings I ended up with were Source Blend: SrcAlpha, Dest Blend: InvSrcAlpha, Z-Test Alpha: 128, Test Mode: GreaterEqual and Z-Write Alpha checked. The transparent material must also be a different material to the "solid" material. However, these are FSX material settings and may not work with FS9 materials.

Complete aside, I'm rather proud of my blister hangars. :)

Thanks Ian,
Not getting the Z test etc reference, are you talking about Gmax or other building prog?

The only thing out of that is the info Z-Test Alpha: 128, if that is the grey scale of the prop disc material, then great I can alter that. I expect in FSX with A etc, expects the clarity of the disc to be controlled by both the material AND the tex.

In my FSX 10.0.60905.0, a basic vanilla version I think, the props show well with no extra transparency.

Sorry, I think I was leading you slightly up the garden path, because I was right - those settings only apply to FSX materials, sorry.

I found this post over at another part of these here fora, which will hopefully give you the answer:
http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforu...s-for-FS9-Only&p=753973&viewfull=1#post753973

Again, sorry to add confusion rather than remove it. It's been a long time since I modelled for FS9. I shall consider myself swiped firmly around the ear and sent to my room until I learn to check before typing!!!

Ian P.
(Edited to add: The material settings apply to FSX materials, regardless of whether you're using GMax, 3DSMax or Blender to model. They don't apply to FS9 materials, regardless of whether you're using, etc. etc. etc.)
