I want to relate a quick story about an incident I had with a local AirMediVac Heli some years ago (a Bell 407). . .seeing the image of that one brought back the following:
I was working for a restoration company after I retired from the AF in "07. . .my local airport. One of my duties was to be on call to refuel the local MediVac Heli which was hangared next to our hangar. I got the call one evening that he was 15 minutes out. I got to the airport and got the fuel truck started and grounded just about the time the Heli showed at the end of the rwy on his way in. He wanted to hot fuel so once he set down, the engine remained at idle and the paramedic exited and placed their ground pin in the receptacle below the fuel door. I was waiting with the ground cable and snapped it in place. I turned and headed back to the truck to retrieve the hose and start fueling when I heard a snap sound and turned to see the loose ground cable disconnect and start an "upward" movement. I held my breath and luckily, the clamp and cable were of sufficient weight that it immediately dropped to the ground. Phew!! I moved to the clamp, grabbed it snapped it place again and finished refueling. Nobody on the heli saw what had "almost happened". After they departed, I sat in the truck filling out the refuel ticket paperwork and realized I was shaking like a leaf, lol. That was close.
I love Helicopters....We take them for granted often..this miracle of flight.Man flying almost like a Dragonfly. While I do have a Pilots Ticket,my admiration goes to those who can pilot these with supreme grace....Its An't easy!..Many Years ago ,while I was employed at a major resort hotel,we had a convention of BOY SCOUTS...Be aware at that time every CEO of every major company was a BOY SCOUT..They all descended at this Resort..By Jet,and Copters...it was 1972..Being The Supt.Of Services then,I made the arrangements for the arrivals...I met one Kid then,Recently returned from Nam..He landed a job as Company Pilot..Helicopter.He took me for a ride, from the Golf Course Parking Area.I'll never forget his skills..as he joyful demonstrated his love of flying the thing. Inches from the ground,I do not know his name,But will never forget the little time with him...But He was good!...Ya can give ten guys a violin, all can play, but there is always one who stands out,A Master,..This Young Man Stood out!.....Thnx Vin<label for="rb_iconid_24">
Have always been a fan of the yellow PHI livery myself, and as one who has some r/w flight time in the Bell 407 , can't wait for the FSX offering, although she looks much better with a Bambi Bucket hooked on ! I used to work for Helicopter Express/ UK-USA Helicopters many moons ago doing US Forest Service contract initial attack, fell in love with the 407 immediately. Here's a pic of the Modern HEX paint job ... Mike
