</header>Wednesday evening, June 24, a hobby drone flown over the Lake Fire east of San Bernardino, California caused a safety problem, requiring all firefighting aircraft to be grounded, according to CAL FIRE Public Information Officer Daniel Berlant.
A collision between a drone and a helicopter or fixed wing aircraft could be fatal if it damages the windshield, the engine, props, or rotors.
Bob Collins, in an article at Minnesota Public Radio, thinks it is “overkill” to ground firefighting aircraft because a drone has been seen in the area.

…Of course, the hobbyist shouldn’t have been flying a quadcopter where the FAA had established a no-fly zone. But halting operations is overkill. Flying is inherently risky and it’s impossible to do it risk-free; risk is something aviators manage and staying on the ground because a knucklehead is flying a quadcopter is illogical and impractical.
It’s a dramatic way to make a point, but the quadcopters aren’t going to be banned out of the sky.

Totally irresponsible behaviour from the knuckle-head drone pilot(s) IMHO. If they were flying hobby drones in a declared FAA no-fly-zone then they deserve to go to jail if/when caught.

Just because they want to put up a video on Youtube does not mean they can jeopardize the lives of fire tanker pilots, firemen on the ground and the possible loss of buildings and civilians due to their stupidity.

Not knowing it was a no-fly-zone is not an excuse either! If you are going to fly a drone then you must know the rules on when/where you can fly.

Yeah, I know... It's too dangerous to try that for real, but it would serve the pilot right to have his high dollar toy drowned and slammed to the ground.

Considering the seeming increasing numbers of irresponsible and possibly nefarious individuals owning and operating these things, it will not be long and there will be licensing and registration requirements or an outright ban on privately owned drones. I fear such might also be extended to R/C aircraft as well.

happened on the "sterling fire" on thursday,but they had a pretty cool pic of a crew watching the fire from across the canyon.....building line wayyyyyyyyy away from the head..lol

No self respecting RC enthusiasts would do something like that. I used to build and fly RC aircraft, I know. The expense for one thing would deter from pulling a stunt like that and risking all that equipment. Most RC pilots have a great respect for aviation. The problem with these drones is that anybody can fly them there's no challenge in it, even the boys from South Park could fly them.

Drats. All I am left wondering is, why, Why would someone even want to fake that. Too much time on their hands is my guess, it doesn`t make out world a better place so why bother.
