Obvious question, Why?

It seem like 90% of what is needed is here at SOH but no on has put a mod team together. Is it a lack of time, skill or no one is willing to lend there work to build a full blown CFS2 europe?

Allen,

I'll address this one in the morning. I don't have the energy tonight. :wiggle:

Of course I know that CFS2 is payware so doing such a large mod would sill be a challenge.

Allen, i see that you've been an SOH member since 2007. You must have missed this along the way, but around the time of your joining us, we discussed and even attempted the mod team concept, with a Pacific focus. As i recall, the group set out to determine the best mod design and data collection method, leading to the selection of addons. The main problems in my recollection was (A) the time constraints demanded of potential key players with more important things on their minds, and (B) the lack of consensus on what to include in the package. Now, (A) is self-explanatory - some vital, skilled players just couldn't commit at the time. But regarding (B), IMO the main underlying problem was that during the period of 2001 to 2007, there was a flood of new addon scenery, interfaces, weapons, objects and aircraft/ship models thrown into the mix from multiple designers and every user had his/her preferences. It was difficult to get any kind of agreement on how to proceed and what to include, so the cohesiveness of the small exploratory group eventually dissipated.

Users here in the basement tend to be very individualistic types who strongly reserve the right to customize our "whole world" CFS2 platforms our own way and not be handed a canned theater project with so many potentially conflicting addons to contend with after the fact. In addition to this, there was a much wider range of computing power in the user base during that period which also affected addons selections. A beautiful scenery complex that yields 85-100 FPS on one man's uber-rig may give another man a slideshow headache when the sky fills and the shooting starts.

I'm sure Rami and others will weigh in on this subject as they feel compelled, but frankly i think Rami has done us all an epic service on this subject with his Euro install guide. If you follow it precisely, you'll have your own private, full blown Euro mod without all of the hype, sweat and tears of an official mod team. And when you're done, there's no mod team to bitch at when things go sideways - just retrace your steps or remove something that doesn't work. You want easy - you won't find it any easier than this guide, once you procure all of the downloads listed within.

Ive been here since 2007 but there is a large gap. I left and started modding Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun and Command & Conquer: Red Alert 1. During that time I did most of the work that would be come Red Dawn a mod that ports vary large parts of Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn to the Red Alert 1 engine.

I know evey one is vary individualistic down here. The one thing I leaned after the release Red Dawn was the number of people that wanted to do a Tiberian Dawn mod of there own but didn't the the skill or were overwhelmed at the task of doing a basic port let alone doing all of the fine details.

Somthing like CFS1 but with generic destoyable objects around the airfields like CFS2 and basic scenery for London, It dosen't have to be destoyable just crashable. Paris and Berlin would be a plus. Toss in a some things a weapons pack plus a few aircrft and a mission or 2 and you have a CFS2 Euro kit that fully expanable.

Like you said it may be best to go solo at it.

Allen, I'll weighin here because I am merely updating my Bong missions for an upgraded campaign in the SW Pacific. The scenery requirements are busting the chops of the guys that are testing my missions for me. I used to load as many aircraft as CFS2 would allow to keep the missions as historically accurate as CFS2 would allow. I don't start in the air and end in the air with my missions. I start from the actual sim airbases and fly back and land at the actual sim airbases. As Rami can tell you, for Tuskegee Airmen, I built some towns with med apts and buildings. The FPS went south in a heart-beat for those without power machines.

I support you idea, fully. In 18 months, I will be retired and will devote more time to CFS2 stuff. I will even learn how to build scenery.

Allen,

Here is the link to me ETO install guide: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=49&id=2931

Regarding the ETO, I more or less am the architect of the entire ETO theatre, as least as far as missions and campaigns are concerned. (The obvious exception being Captain Kurt's 354th Fighter Group campaign) For the Early and late ETO theaters, I use the same mesh and coastlines, as well as GSL ports.

My recommendation would be to follow the ETO guide and lay down the base scenery, and then add the GSL ports: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=45&id=4315

This will make installing a campaign (Such as the Battle of Britain, Battle of France, or perhaps the Norwegian campaigns) that much easier for you.

But as Bearcat says, most of the old pros like to tweak their installs to suit their personal tastes. I am no exception to this idea, I'm afraid.

The team effort was really at high speed with a CFS 2 Vietnam project by a fellow in Canada. He and his team came close to pulling it off, but after a year or so, it fell off of the radar screen.

Jag;

IIRC that attempt to make a Vietnam install, which I tried myself and I am FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR from the necessary skills as the team, ended because they found that the requirements exceeded the capability of most machines available to us common folk.:icon_lol: Specifically, I understood, the factor of jets.
That is just what I remember of what I had been told when I inquired at another forum.

I also heard that the SAMs and Air to Air missiles we a pain. the sams worked ok but no lockon for the AA Missiles.

I'm following the ETO install guide however by the time I got to LOD7_16.zip this is what I get.

You do not have sufficient download allowances available at the moment

Allen,
Are you on a dial up modem?

That seems way too long a time for a DSL or cable modem download.
