Editing the 'key' file as in keyboard, joystick

U

I am use to EAW so I am thinking in terms I am use to in that game. In that game we have an 'ini' file where we can edit using Notepad. For CFS3 I made changes from the default keyboard/mouse settings from inside the game and saved it as 'Uriah1'. I then found a file 'Uriah1.xca'.

Here are my questions: Can I edit that file? And if so with what?

Because I have trackIR I would like to be able to assign values to the hat switch, but don't seem to be able to assign non pov values to the hat switch. So I thought if I could find the file I could do it by editing using something like Notepad.

AFAIK the POV does only send one "press" signal when used as a button. The config must be made at the joystick level, using the config utility to map the POV to 4 or 8 different keys. Then you will config CFS 3 through the in-game tool, pressing the POV the right way.

Here is the POV line for my saitek X52 (POV #1 as there are three of them) :
<Pov ID="1" Action="HeadPov"/>
as you see there is no mention of the direction the POV is pressed.

So noelberrier, if I want to do this I have to use the joystick software and give POV1 a value of say 'U' and then set in the game the 'U' key to the vaule I want, say 'float view' - do I understand correctly?

Yes. You can assign the key in game directly by pressing the POV as the POV action is set to this key (you could ever use the POV to type U in notepad for instance). You should even assign 4 keys to the 4 ways of the POV, for instance float, chase, target ... views.

(If you only want to assign one view to the POV, it may be enough to assign it in game, pressing the POV in any direction. But you would waste 3 options)

I hope this kind of mapping is available for your joystick. It is for logitech and saitek, using an utility on the driver CD.

I prefer to assign composite keys (Ctrl + U) to buttons, and keep direct keys for keyboard functions : L for lights, P for target parenthesis switch, U for metric/imperial units ...

Good luck !
