I assume, you´re not in your 20s anymore since you played the original game.
I am in ED now since a bit over a year. If you liked the game, you´ll love this one!
What has changed since 1985:
30 ships to fly
additional repaints available
planetary landings on planets without atmosphere
ship launched fighters for several (bigger) ships.
Trading, mining, fighting, piracy, Exploration
ship tuning
grinding and griefing :-(
Aliens?!?
3 modes: open, private game or solo (all require Internet Connection since things like stockmarket is updated)
new friends arround the world
average age of players might be 35-45
it´s rather a space sim than an action game (just like 1985) with good physics
downside: some players love to kill newbies just for fun...but then you can always switch to solo mode - you´ll miss the chance to interact with other players then
