Enjoying the IRIS freeware like never before!

When the generous folks at IRIS Simulations released that nice long list of planes as freeware a while back, I grabbed them all, installed them all, and flew them all. Some of them worked great on my older system, others killed my frame rates. Like the Mig-29. Which was a shame as I really like the way the Mig-29 looks. And the Mig-27. And the F-15.

This evening, I reinstalled those planes and went into the panel.cfg and commented out the HUDs and got my frame rates back! I can now fly the Mig-29 and Mig-27 and have my frame rates right where they should be....24.8 to 25 FPS (my sim is locked at 25). Even with my TrackIR system on, I still get real close to the max FPS most of the time...if I do a large head turn, then my frames drop to around 18 or so for a few seconds but climb right back up to where they should be.

Now, I don't now if killing the HUDs in these planes is totally responsible for the regain in frame rates, but it helped!

I also dumped AVG 2011 and am now running Microsoft Security Essentials. I have been happy with AVG for a few years, but the new version really hogged up a lot of resources. The switch to MSE freed up a good portion of the resources being used by AVG.

So anyhow, if you have an older system like mine (Pentium 4 at 3.0Ghz, 2Gig PC3200 RAM, 512Meg Nvidia GeForce 7600GS, and 6 leaking MOBO capacitors) and find that the IRIS freeware jets kill your frame rates, go into the panel config file and find the VC entries for the HUD and put a // in front of the line. That will kill the HUD. On the Mig-29, also find the VC entry for the GPS panel and // it too. Not the pop up window GPS, but the one in the VC entry...the one that runs on the VC panel...that was a frame killer on my system as well.

And go with Microsoft Security Essentials to free up system resources.

Off give the F-15 a flight and see how it does now.

Merc Air's Flight 19 entered FlightSim's RTW warmup event in the now freeware Iris P-40, flying group flights in it on the SOH Multiplayer server. It's been a hoot racing them from Russia across the Aleutians towards Juneau.

Yes, the IRIS HUDs are a framerate killer. Try swapping out with some others. I think I'm using the HUD from the earlier DSB F-15 Eagle.

i use the HUD from their Eurofighter... doesn't seem to affect frames.... on my rig anyways, be good to hear if others experience the same performance using it....

lol, your older system is better than the one I got for Christmas last year.

I confirm that the HUD in some of the IRIS planes are real FPS killers.
The problem is exactely the same when you try to install those planes on FSX for exemple.
The solution, as mentionned above, is simply to use the HUD from another plane. For freewares, the HUD from the KBT hornet is not bad at all.

Did everyone see that there is a sale on Iris going on over at the Pilot Shop at Flightsim?
I believe like 50% or more off!
I picked up the PC-9 and the F-4. Both for FS9. $5 EACH!!!!!!!

I also confirm. The HUD on the EAP/Cyclone/Vortex was a bit of a problem on my Jetline but with it gone it has become one of my Iris favorites.
Doh!:173go1:I never thought to replace the HUD.I will have to try that.

It's a $5 sale across the board buddy, probably stay in effect till the new year...

I bought the Iris F-15 after it came out and was a bit of a frame hog but I don't seem to have a problem with it anymore. I built a new computer since I bought it but this build is now 4 years old. The freeware Coral version is just as good so I tend to fly that one more anyway since it is in our VA fleet.
Obio- I agree that AVG is getting pretty bloated and I was thinking about dumping it for something new. Seems like with every new release they come closer to being Norton's. :toilet:

I had the same problem when I first bought the F-15C/D model a while back. Following some advice on the Iris forums at the time, I swapped out the Iris HUD for the one that came with the Coral F-15. Problem solved.

I still need to do the same with the F-15E's HUD.

$5 for the IRIS F-4? I am going to have to vacuum out the sofa and see if there is enough change down in there to get me one of those. Have been DYING for a nice Phantom to crash. The old freeware Alphasim F-4s have been doing the job...but twould be nice to have a really nice Double Ugly to boom and zoom in.

I have gone in to the VC section of the panel config on a number of the IRIS freeware birds and really chopped out a ton of gauges. I don't use the radio, ADF, transponder stuff, and clickable VCs aren't a major thing for me since I can't control my mouse and my joystick with my right hand at the same time. So, I commented out (the // thing) all of the gauges for increasing and decreasing the radio frequency, the ADF, the transponder. Ditching all of those gauges has made the overall VC much smoother during flights.
