ETO .303 and 50 cal. Incendiary Rounds

Good morning Guys,

I took some time off from CFS3 for awhile and have not been on the SOH forum. I apologize to those of you that have sent me PMs requesting help or information on various subjects and I have not responded.

Several weeks ago Clive requested a new .303 incendiary round with new effects for a Spitfire he is working on. The new .303 round along with a new .50 cal round have been in testing for a few weeks now. Still screenshots do not do the new rounds justice and maybe someone can later upload a fraps video with them in action.

Shortly we will be releasing the new .303 and 50 cal. incendiary gun, round and effects in a package to be uploaded here on SOH. The pack will also include one P-47 upgraded and loaded with a mixture of incendiary and ball ammunition. We will also include several new ground attack missions on vehicles and trains.

The new incendiary ammunition produces a highly visible yellow/orange flash when it strikes the target. The twinkling effect is impressive as the rounds strike either an aircraft or when strafing ground targets. The incendiary rounds will be 20% more effective than the current .303 and 50cal ammunition. This should help you when flying Hurricanes against German Bombers.

RAF pilots were very happy with the incendiary rounds as they were 20% more effective against German bombers and the strike flashes gave them visible evidence that their rounds were on target. (By 1942 the standard loading for fixed .303s was half loaded with AP and half with incendiary.)

A new ground impact effect has been added to the rounds to produce a small flash as the rounds strike the ground as well.

The new rounds and the P-47 will also be included in the October ETO update as will the Mossie 57mm upgrade pack that was uploaded earlier here on SOH.

The early upload will make the new guns, rounds and effects available to others who are currently working on aircraft and may want to include them.

We will be including these new rounds in the Solomons PTO Update also scheduled for October/December. The US Navy aircraft in PTO will receive a load of incendiaries.

There is a list being developed of enhancements and additions to be included in the October ETO update and hopefully one of the guys will be kind enough to post that list a little later.

Best Regards

Steve,

I made incendiary and high explosive in addition to armor piercing rounds for 20 and 30 mm cannon rounds for German planes. Please send me the files or directions so I can release these with these new effects.

Ted,

I just emailed you the 50 cal test pack that Grizzley, Clive and Rob have been flying. I am making final tweaks to both the rounds and will have the final pack up on the FTP sometime tomorrow.

Ted, you will notice that the new effects file actually has two new impact effects in it. One is red/orange and the other orange/yellow. There were references to the more red impact flash in some of the research I was doing. That effect may work for some of the German rounds as well.

sounds really good O1. glad to see you post on SOH again. I was almost getting worried that you might like the break so much you wouldn't come back.

An interesting point is that at least to begin with - BoF, BoB - RAF fighters did not use tracer - or rather, used tracer for the last X rounds in the load so as to be able to see the ammunition had run out. Goodness knows how that might be modelled - as far as I can see, it can't.

then how do these modelers proceed , is it a war time realism for that period or any .. and if only used when ammo runs out ...ummmmmmmmmm

You are correct when you stated it is not possible to make partial tracer loads. However it would be a simple fix to remove the tracers from early war aircraft to make them more accurate. An even bigger problem is the current yellow impact flash present on all aircraft even Maw. This yellow flash was carried over from the stock effect and should not be present on guns shooting ball (non incendiary) ammunition. The only rounds that should produce an impact flash are cannon shells and incendiaries.

Thanks for your comments
