ETO worries...

Using Rami's ETO install guide i've gotten everything needed downloaded. Now to find the courage and time to install all of it. Seems a little daunting to get it going, and not even including all the airbases i want to install. I guess since it has been done by others it can't be too bad. Now just to pick a day where i have some spare time and not play my other sims for a while.Wish me luck as i'm going to need all i can get ! Got to have all those wonderful Bf-109's just released and there are so many other aircraft to choose from ! This is why i want a ETO install to begin with. Regards ,Scott

:encouragement: You are off to a good start with Rami's guide. Enjoy the process... airbase.dat entries can be tedious, that's why I include a working copy of mine with each campaign I publish.

This should make it easier and cut your install time in half or better.

Start with a clean stock install.

Attached is a zip file with a scenery.cfg file. an airbases.dat file and a preloaded CFS2.gsl file which you can just put in your European CFS2. The scenery.cfg file goes in the main CFS2 folder, the airbases.dat goes in the CFS2/INFO folder and the GSL file goes in the CFS2/GSL folder.

Using this all you need to do is put your downloaded files into the folders that Rami describes BUT DON"T GO THROUGH THE PROCEDURE OF ADDING THEM ONE BY ONE IN THE GAME SCENERY LIBRARY. The Library will already be built.

The Library already will have your primary European airfield scenery.

Download the following scenery files from SOH and put the unzipped folders in the CFS2/SCENEDB folder.

Achim27619's airfields:

JHS_England
JHS_France_North
JHS_German
JHS_BNL (which is Belgium and Netherlands)

You will need to download additional scenery buildings packages. Just follow Achim's instructions.

Ettico's scenery:

EuroTargets_complete

The single airfield:

Oldenburg

You may consider installing one or more of these 3 Campaigns:

20th Fighter Group by Rami (Auto installer)
The Battle of Britain by Rami
The 354th Fighter Group in WWII by Captain Kurt (Auto installer)

These are basically complete packages. They will require some additional downloads but not much as you will have already downloaded most of it for Achim's airfields. They contain additional airfields, buildings and aircraft you will want. The airbases.dat already has the airfields from these campaigns listed in it as does the CFS2.gsl. If you don't want to install these campaigns, open the scenery.cfg file and delete entries 24, 25, and 26.

Thanks CK for the help ! Makes things so much easier. Will install everything probably Tuesday as it is my next day off. Can't wait to get started. CFS2 offers so many more aircraft than CFS3,especially Russian aircraft, it makes it very worthwhile . Easier to use/fly than my IL-2 installs. CFS2 is just so much fun! Glad i came back. You guys are so helpful too. Thanks. Regards,Scott

Just be aware that there is an airfield.dat limit of 250 airfields, plus or minus. It's easy to exceed that limit if you add too many countries to a single install.

I did that a few years ago in the Pacific theater before I was aware of this limitation and the game wouldn't start FF, QC, Mission Builder, etc. It was driving me nuts until I figured it out. So I'm passing it along in case you didn't know about it. :wavey:

CK.......

...quick, and maybe silly, question here. I was looking "EZ Euro autoinstall" and in your scenery file you have #12 reading as "DEM Mesh". Would your DEM Mesh be the same as a DEM 7 Mesh?
I ask only because I have DEM's 7 & 8 delineated as DEM 7 and DEM 8 with the rest installed as instructed. Matter of labeling but curious here. I did it this way as it would be easier to correct any later changes and everything is labeled as to what it contains.
Hope this question makes sense to you.

CK,can i add Russia or would that be too many ? Getting started pretty soon and a little intimidated of the install. CFS3 and IL-2 '46 expansions are nothing like this. They are simple auto installs except for CFS3 ETO 1.50 and Rising Sun that has a few mods that has to be done to work in Win7. Your ez-install looks very doable though. Thanks for the advice on the airfields limit. So many limits.... Regards,Scott

sixstrings5859: I run a separate install for the Eastern Front and 2 for Western Europe (1939-1942 and 1943-VE Day). For the Med, I have a 1940-45 Western Med, a 1940-43 and a 1944-45 Eastern Med (both including Italy and the Balkans). That keeps me from overloading my airbases.dat file, especially for Western Europe... :wiggle:

In other words, I strongly recommend making multiple installs. airbases.day aside, just the number of aircraft you would need calls for multiple installs.

Before my old desktop collapsed, I had 6 different CFS2 installs :
- WW2 PTO/CBI
- WW2 ETO
- WW2 EFTO
- WW2 MTO
- WW1
- Korean War

For when I will be back with a new computer, I am considering splitting PTO and CBI, as well as early and late ETO (39-41 and 42-45). I may stay with only one MTO install though, since I am mostly interested in Malta and North Africa operations.

I second what Shadow Wolf 07 just said. You need multiple installations to deal with all the different aircraft and airbases. This will also allow you to keep your amount of OBJECTS_DP files under the limit (no need for Japanese items in ETO, or Italian items in PTO). And another important reason, you will be able to use a different set of ground textures optimized for each theater.

Thanks for the info folks. When you say different ground textures what do you mean ? I thought this was covered with the ETO install. Regards,Scott

There are many ground texture sets available. IIRC, the one you will use if you follow Rami's ETO install guide are great for ETO, but you can replace them with any other texture set you like.

For ETO (or EFTO) there are many texture sets, just choose the one you like the most:
- Stiz http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links_search.php?action=show&userid=150&sort=d
- Simonu http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links_search.php?action=show&userid=28671&sort=d
- Richard Ludowise (search for 'Richard Ludowise' in Flightsim.com's library)

You may use different texture sets for ETO, MTO and PTO, since the landsape looks different for each area.

Shadow Wolf, what textures do i need for the eastern front-(Russia) ? Are the different than what is recommended by Rami ? Mainly interested in the ETO 1942-45 and the Eastern Front. Will have a separate install for each. Have all i want for the PTO and ready to move on. Everything else i have covered well with CFS3 and have all covered by IL-2 '46 but like the game play-(easy), of CFS2 the best. Lots of Luftwaffe aircraft to choose from and other neat stuff,i can't wait !

Grab Canion's Kursk Airfields, Achim's Poland, East Prussia, RUS (Russia), Bulgaria, Romania, Sander de Cocq's Finnish Sea, and Ajax's Eastern Front Scenery Project files (ESP01 to ESP06) Ajax includes the ground textures appropriate including an alternative for winter which will really give you a different look from your other CFS2 installs.

I'm not sure who posted this East Front install instruction but I think it was Rami, someone correct me if not;

The Eastern Front has a mix of airfields from Achim27619, Ajax, and Canion. (The airfields in Finland by Sander De Cocq are in the process of being moved and redone)

Also, check carefully within Ajax's Eastern Front packages. One of the packages contains an airfield at Sebastopol which can no longer be used, due to Rhumba's new watermasks, and Ajax's fields at Orel and Kharkov (I think) interfere with the Kursk airfields by Canion.

You can keep the same ETO textures by Sander if you copy them into the root TEXTURE folder.
you put them in. Just make up a backup of your GSL file when you do Ajax's Eastern Front scenery pack 03, because that's the one where you'll have to remove the GSL gobs for Orel / Kharkov. You'll want to use Canion's fields instead for those two places.

Thank you Captain for all the good information. Very helpful. Saves me a lot of time and heartache. The Eastern Front is the main reason i got into CFS2 in the first place. CFS3 just doesn't compare in this regard . Cheers,Scott
