that's sumpin I wuz wunderin' as well...:ques:

As a matter of fact, Torpedoes should prolly not keep moving or explode in the water when dropped from too high up...
(become bombs magically?... not bl**dy likely, I'll wager):p:

Well the answer is not straight forward as you can imagine depending on many factors, but how low can you go? Coastal never used their Whimpeys for this work as far as I know, but generally most topedo carrying aircraft used to go to 100 ft or below. I'll look in my Books to see what I've got.

I can't find any discriptions of Wellington torp attacks yet. However I did find an discription of the creation of the Mk XIII which was Coastal's first torp carrying Welly. It was a modified Mk XII sub hunter. As part of the mod they re-installed the forward turret. To I presume to stafe flak (my speculation), I'm still looking to find any accounts of torp attacks by Whimpys.

I have tried it myself and have often been crucified by the flak. You're a big slow target compared to other CFS3 Torp aircraft. CC Beauforts used to fly in at wavetop height then rise to 100' approx for the torp drop to avoid flak. Later on Torbeau's flew in wings with Flakbeau's to go in and distract the flak from the low slow torpedo aircraft. S I might expect to the Torp Wellies to have similar support.

Initially yes just the cannon and after they would cover against fighters, later when they became available they would carry rockets. Interestingly most of the strike wings appeared to have opted out of the torpedo game with the widespread use of rockets. The were safer for the crew, had more chance of success and were cheaper (torps were very expensive). All users of torps had reliability issues with the weapon and it needed specialised training than roackets. Also torps were useless for use in the Norwegian fjords.
