By late 1942 the aging Sparviero was facing continually improving Allied fighters and anti aircraft defences, leading to the General staff exploring the idea of using a fighter aircraft for torpedo attacks. A fighter operating from Italian coasts with an operational range of 300–400 km (190-250 mi) would be capable of delivering a torpedo at high speed and evade enemy fighters or engage them after the attack run.
