Falcon409_On My Way

Well, this one didn't get very far. I knew, when I saw that the RTW-Duenna was being used that it wasn't going to go well. We didn't get along very well on the Melbourne Race either and this was no exception. Right off the bat it told me my realism settings were incorrect, they were not, they were dead on. I closed FSX, restarted, checked the realism settings and started the Duenna (1 error, realism settings incorrect). I ignored it and went on.

The first leg I had set up was for 745nm, the Mig-15 has a general range of 1100 miles so I figured I was fine. I set the pilot weight, checked to see if I had full fuel on-board and took off. Less than half way there I was already sitting on less than 50% fuel, lol. I could see I wasn't going to make it and so I looked for an alternate landing. . .none within range. . .so I added fuel to at least get to the first Island airport I could find (2 errors, refueled). I landed, let the Duenna continue to run and refueled. Back in the air, checked the Duenna. . .DONE. lol, lol. I just closed out FSX and had a good laugh.

The Mig-15 doesn't have a mixture control, so no way to tweak fuel consumption at different altitudes. I was flying at 525kias, but even if I had dropped to half that to conserve fuel, the added time in the air would have drained it eventually anyway. I'm not sure where they get the 1100 mile range from, but this may be why there weren't any Mig-15's entered in the trip, lol.

You'd be surprised at how much efficiency is gained with altitude. I cut my consumption in half by adding 10k feet to my altitude in the Vulcan. I don't know the mig at all, but the higher alt above 30k feet may get you that elusive 1100 nm range quote.

For most jets the best speed/range is between 20,000 - 25,000.

Take the Saab J-29F I just finished with

This test was done in level flight, no weather, and the after burner on the whole time. Note that the range numbers are not including the distance traveled from the airport to get up to altitude. They still are reasonably close and demonstrate the trade off of altitude.

Alt ---------------TAS---------------Range----------Sustained Mach
10,000------------619---------------728-----------------.97
15,000------------602---------------850-----------------.97
20,000------------597---------------975-----------------.97
25,000------------584---------------1140----------------.97
30,000------------570---------------1360----------------.97
35,000------------557---------------1640----------------.96
40,000------------548---------------2021----------------.954

You lose a little over 20 kts of true air speed at 20,000 but gain 247 nm of range.

As you go up the speed drops off more with the range extending. At 35,000 it can no longer maintain .97 mach in level flight.

At 10,000 the fuel burn is 3729 PPH with the burner on and 2773 with it off.
At 40,000 the fuel burn is 1071 PPH on the burner and 764 with it off.

Speeds and ranges can vary by aircraft but the best trade off is in the mid range. From there you can always adjust. If you don't need the range go low to use the speed. However sometimes you can grab a nice tail wind up high. From South Korea to Japan I went up to 34,000 I did not need to or want to but the wind was 160kts directly on the tail (I got the screen shot to prove it :icon_lol:)

As for the Duenna here is how it is fixed.

Start up flight simulator make sure all of your realism settings are correct sometimes they need nudged. I once had that problem and it was the sliders at 99% not 100%. You could not tell by looking at them.

Load up at a airstrip in your local time zone making sure you have real world updates set.

Save this flight as your default flight.

Shut flight simulator off and start it again make sure all the changes are the same you should be good to go.

I will be on TS tonight if you want to stop by and work on it.

The Pulqui has pretty much the same range issues as the MiG 15 (very similar designs and the same engine). Above 30,000 it gets "wobbly" so I've been mainly flying at 28,000 and just throttling back to increase my range. For the Japan/Russia leg, I went to 32,000 and "wobbled" my way there with reduced throttle. There's more that one way to skin a cat.
