family friend has lost his leg due to that bactieria

a family friend whos parents and extended family were interned during world war two in extreme northern california,ray and his brother don were just but kids then,but they built a family business in auburn of a nursery...one of the largest and best in placer county for many many years....just found out that ray,who has been in very good health for a man his age (80ish?) went on a trip..came hom feeling ill,,he has now had his right leg removed and his left foot,,,and his right arm is in danger.....things dont look good...this is a nasty virus or bactieira....i dont know what it is...but it needs to be taken care of...

Was it a staph infection? MRSA perhaps?
 
well i dont know if its MRSA or not..it was just told to my family as a flesh eating bactiria....i have had..and continue to battle MRSA..i have an open wound on my leg ( ive talked of it in the past) the MRSA infection comes and goes in my wound ( with treatment)...but this is just nasty....it seems to be the same sort of thing that the young woman who rode the zipline got...i saw a show on anderson cooper's afternoon tv show...two women who were on that show...they did not know one another,but both had the same thing happen...just one day the women had stomache pains..got worse and worse..the one woman stated she called for help..and remembers nothing else...woke up several months later with no legs or arms...the second woman was simular..she had stomache crapms..passed out..was put into an induced coma for several months..came out with both legs amputated and one hand gone....they both had been active "soccar moms",cant even do basic hygene needs now...

our friend ray..who i spoke of above...seems he had visited a friend in the hospital who had had a heart attack,,,,seems this "virus" or whatever it is was contracted from there..but not from the person he visited at all...scary stuff i tell ya
 
You know, there was a time in the 60s and 70s when doctors would give you antibiotics for almost anything. Then, they
took the position that there was too many being used and that the body was building up resistance to them; so they
quit giving them out. In recent years, the trend of giving antibiotics out has re-emerged.

Now add to that, anti-bacterial hand soap, wipes, etc., you'd have to wonder if maybe we're killing the "good" bacteria
along with the bad and it's starting to have a backlash.

About 2 years ago, I came back from vacation with what I thought was a sunburn on my forehead. It was red and itched like
a sunburn would. The day after we got home, my face was swollen and I felt really lethargic. I went to the doctor and he
gave me some antibiotics, but a day later I was in the hospital taking the next to the most powerful antibiotic they had by
drip. Stayed in the hospital a week and came home with a 10 day prescription of anti-biotics. The only thing that kept me
from scratching the daylights out of my forehead was a pain patch that he prescribed to wear on my forehead for 8 hours a
day to numb it. Hey, no brain-dead comments!!!

Doctor said it was a staph infection, really nasty one. He said I could've picked it up off the phone in the hotel room and he
too, voiced the opinion regarding antibacterial products in use.
 
It sounds like a Norovirus, a nasty flesh eating bacteria. The same thing that happened to a young US woman who had to have her legs and arm amputated, just recently.
 
I had a job a few months ago as a part-time janitor/housekeeper at our local hospital. We wiped-down all horizontal surfaces with an anti-viral/bacterial solution. The viruses and bacteria cling to dust particles, and horizontal surfaces are most likely to be touched by staff and visitors... and then spread to other rooms. It's impossible to sterilize an entire room, so we just try to prevent the spread.

Easiest place to catch a nasty bug is at the hospital, clinic or doctor's office. That's why they have hand-sanitizers on the walls. Assume you are exposed, and kill the germs with the sanitizer. Dead germs don't build a resistance to hand sanitizer. They are just dead.

At home, is another story. Your family are the ones that spread germs on the home surfaces. Even if you successfully kill all the germs, your family will "infect' all the surfaces in minutes. Sanitizers are only needed if someone has something like MRSA, or when handling feces. Use latex or vinyl gloves. Wash your hands, then apply the sanitizer. You cannot sterilize an entire house, contrary to what Johnson&Johnson would like us to believe.

We need to sanitize our hands because we're always rubbing our eyes, picking our noses, wiping our mouths... all easy entry points for germs. Most germs die in a short span of time. Gloves and sanitizers buy us that time.

Sounds like it may have been a staph infection that led to necrotizing fasciitis, which is more common than people think. Staph is often present on the skin and can be hard to eliminate completely and all it needs is a small wound or even a bruise to gain entry to the tissue beneath. I was born with a very rare genetic disorder known as Christ-Siemens-Touraine (CST) syndrome which prevented my immune system from fully developing and as a result I'm prone to very serious lung and skin infections. I've had seven serious cellulitis infections in my lower left leg since 1996 and one in the lower right, each one cause by staph, and if one develops I have to get to the hospital right away and get them to get on top of it as it spreads very fast and can develop into necrotizing fasciitis if not treated quickly. My last episode was two years ago and since then a specialist has had me on a daily regimen of antibiotics that has held it at bay. Here's hoping it stays that way because when I get cellulitis I get very sick and it's extremely painful and messy to boot.
